Is it normal to hear random thoughts/voice while drifting off to sleep?

When I’m about to drift off to sleep, I’ll sometimes hear voices or random phrases. A lot of times it’s just random thoughts I hear in my own head (you know, like whatever the voice inside your head sounds like) but sometimes I hear them in other voices like a friend’s or celebrity’s. I normally just hear random phrases or words that usually make no sense, and the “voices” aren’t talking to me or anything creepy like that. The best way I can describe it is like when there are several conversations happening around you and you randomly tune into one of them.

It only happens right as I’m about to fall asleep as I’m drifting off. I rarely remember them since I usually fall asleep right afterwards but I recently made myself wake back up so I could write down a few of them (see below). That being said, I remember enough to know they’re never negative or scary thoughts, just really random.

It doesn’t bother me at all, but I’m just curious if anyone else has experienced this or if it’s normal. It could be a result of my normally overactive mind or maybe some sort of dream-like phenomena, but I’m always hesitant to talk about it because I’m worried it might make me sound crazy.

Here are some examples:
- My own voice: “I’d try it on first to see if it fits”
- Can’t remember specifically but I think it was the voice of a character from The Simpsons: “Just down the street”
- My friend’s voice: “Summer noodles” (that is an example of one of the more random/bizarre ones)
