Is it normal to habitually check the toilet for spiders before use?

Haha, there once was a spider in my toilet and I was happy I saw it. This probably doesn't help you, sorry.

I do this too because I read a story and I believe it was Japanese about a monster that comes front he toilet drain and grabs up your butt and kills you. Needless to say, I always look in the toilet before use...
