Is it normal to fall in love with your male bestfriend?

I am 22,to start with i love my bestfriend.i met him 2 yrs ago In beginning it was all normal we were good friends he and i started sharing everthing one day he said he was in relationship 4 yrs back due to some issues they had breakup.i listened to him and i was the one who said him to try again and patch up he changed the topic.later on as the days passed by i started developing feelings for him dont know how and when he became part of my life.From his side also ge treated me as his gf.But we are of different religion.few days back i confessed my feelings he said he dint bring that love because it would hurt both of us.i asked him to answer in yes or no he said yes but i i felt that yes was not from his heart.what can be done on this i know we both cant have future together but still my heart doesnt accept.It seems so silly but my peace is gone.pls suggest thank you!
