Is it normal that my girlfriend sleeps for 12+ hours every night?

My girlfriend has always slept for 12 to an upwards of 14 hours every night. I know she doesn't always need that much sleep because when we sleep together we get anywhere from 6-10 hours and she's always just fine and says she's well rested. We get to see each other for a few days maybe twice a month, btw. So why is it that when she's on her own, she sleeps half or 3/4 of her day away? It seems irresponsible and really unhealthy but she doesn't see it as a problem. Is it normal?

It's not weird if she has ADHD....Legitimate ADHD - Means that she has received a full (at least 8 day) diagnosis by either a psychiatrist who "specializes" in ADHD and not ADHD, BI-Polar, Hoarding....not a Doctor that has 20 specialties...Or, a Neurologist. Teachers..have absolutely no business diagnosing anyone for ADHD...One of the signs/symptoms is needing at least 10 hours a sleep at night. A few others are: Can only absorb info on the subjects she interested in and what she does well.....she does extremely well..., has trouble staying organized, constantly losing things like car keys, glasses, cell phone...etc, Is she late all the time at least 10 mins if not more..you can research it but I know from very personal experience that needing at least 10 hours sleep a night is a sure sign of ADHD along with the others.....

Maybe I have ADHD? If I'm not interested in a subject it's almost painful to pay attention.

There are lots of medical reasons why someone would feel they need so much sleep. She could go to her gp and get a blood test. That would be a good start to identifying what the problem is. A common possibility is a vitamin deficiency. Don't underestimate those, they can really mess you up.

    Some people require more sleep.

I'm one of those people. Even as a child I slept for very long periods of time and it would scare my parents because they wouldn't see me until nighttime. Now as an adult, I complain about there not being enough hours in the day, because I can't get the sleep I need. Thankfully, my boyfriend understands and just lets me sleep on my days off.

I don't think this is true. Anything above 8-9 is just plain wrong. Some people sleep only 6 hours, they might feel tired, but they get used to it and they're still alive. In the other hand, sleeping more than 9 can and will kill you. You're hardly moving at all for that time, not only that, you're just not doing anything productive. I honestly think you need to reconsider your bad habit. It's not normal

Shut the fuck up. You sound so “know-it-all” when you say that shit. Not to mention stupid.

It was never a habit, but something that is naturally occurring since childhood and I'm still alive, so... 🤔

Also, before you even mention it, I wasn't an obese child and use to run track.

When a child sleeps ma lot, I think most parents are secretly thinking, "Thank goodness, the little brat isn't up and making noise, eating us out of house and home, fighting with anyone, getting in trouble...

Heroin is cheap too but that shits nasty yo. If you're coming down off a bunch of stimulants and youve been up for days youll sleep like a monster. 4 days of meth and youll definitely be sleeping for 12+ hours.

  • Update: I confronted her about it again and she said it's because she's depressed and jobless and doesn't feel like she has much else to do. But now that I'm working, I stressed to her how important it is I get to talk to her before I go to work. She said she was sorry for letting her negative emotions get the best of her and she's been trying and succeeding the past couple nights to wake up around 11am.

I have had 3 doctors tell me that with my genetic conditions I need 13-14 hours of sleep each night. It could be her genetics.

Is it okay if I ask what conditions you have? I'm curious.

Oversleep tends to make us more tired. Depression does as well. Exercise, especially in the morning, gives both a healthy amount of energy, and an ability to sleep soundly at night.

Habits both good and bad are tough to create and tough to break, but are huge in so many facets of our lives and are worth recognizing and trying to improve.

    She might really like sleeping.

Or... She might have underlying issues, I could probably name at least a dozen really bad diseases and mental illnesses.

But you really shouldn't think too much into it, I also have a couple friends that just really like sleeping the day away.

  • Wish I could have 12+ hours sleep every night, I bet if I did, I would be a much more peaceful person.

She probably is sneaking out of there and sucking another dudes dick, and just needs some extra sleep to make up for it. Just let her sleep and don't worry about it.

    • First off, we're lesbians. Second off, she would never do that because SOME people are actually happy in their current relationship. Not to mention she doesn't have a car and still lives with her parents. If she was cheating, you best believe I would find out. I know 100% she's asleep. So quit being a dick.

If it's anything like my cousins who slept 12 hours or more a day: she's going to become obese and possibly diabetic. When you both start living together, perhaps you can help her sleep less?

Nice! Let her sleep, because sleep deprivation MAY cause obesity and other health problems.

            Edit: may

Hold up! Fact check! Sleep deprivation is not what causes obesity, it not healthy, but it does not cause obesity! Obesity is caused by eating to much and not moving enough!

              Comment Hidden ( show )
        • Doesnormalmatter

How did that happen? I don't see any physiological reason why sleeping more than you need would cause one to become obese. Are you sure something else wasn't going on? Correlation does not equal causation.

Someone's triggered! Sorry for playing the odds and assuming your a straight couple, but how was I supposed to know. But 12 hours of sleep is still way more than you need, from what I've heard, 8 hours is the upper limit for health. She needs to talk to her doctor big time if this post is serious, she likely has some medical issues.

I know. I think I am just too brutally honest sometimes. I do try not to make enemies! She said her girlfriend would 'never cheat because she's happy with her current relationship' and my first thought was : ...said everyone about their partner that ever got cheated on ever. Lol!

        • Dude. You don't know our relationship. I'm absolutely positive that there is no chance of her even considering wanting to cheat. She's not like that. She never has been. All of our attention has been placed on each other. We spent literally every single day together before I had to move. Now when I call her intermittently throughout the day I can hear her keyboard taps from playing League of Legends, I can see on her Discord that she and all her friends are playing League or Minecraft or whatever else, or she's snoring over speakerphone when we stay on the phone together at night. She's not cheating.

Chill mate. I am not saying she is cheating. If you don't think so, take your word over mine. You know more about the situation anyways. You don't need to ramble on about how great your relationship is to me, the random guy online, to prove she would never cheat. I suspect she may be cheating, but you are bot obligated to give a damn. Now listen to my other comment, which is logical, not mere speculation, and get her to a doctor, or ever better a sleep doctor. If she really needs that much sleep, something seriosly abnormal and potentially harmful is going on.

You will sleep 12 to 18 hours per day if you take zyprexa.

Sounds as if that's normal for her and also normal to want to do other things rather than sleep when she's with you.

If she's not worried about it I don't think you should be.

    Ok what the fuck?

Wake that lazy bitch up!! Get an alarm!

Does she have a job? If not tell her to get a damn job. Who on earth has the that much free time to sleep.

This is how I would play it. She falls asleep lets say we give her the full 8hrs. But it goes to 8hrs and a minute…

Shove the D in the A! Like super hard.

Wake that mofo up in a second! Just be sure to get her to sign some consent form first…

Or forge the signature your choice.

    • First off, I don't have a dick. I'm her girlfriend. We live in different cities too second off, that's really rude. She's 18 and she's been sheltered her whole life, and now she has no means to leave yet. She has no diploma, no driver's license... Because her mom wouldn't let her get them. When her mom found out she and I were getting serious she flipped out and wouldn't let her leave the house, yet again. She's spent the past 7 years inside because her mother doesn't want her to go anywhere else. I'm trying to get her out of there now that she's an adult. She sleeps because she's not allowed to do much else. I just want her to get up and be healthy and try to help me out with her paperwork and stuff before she leaves.

Oh my bad. A few questions. If she has been so sheltered how is her mama going to let her have a hot lesbian relationship (in the sense of allowing communication) and not a job, diploma or driving licence?

This shit just ain't adding up.

I mean don't get it wrong. Lesbians are great (just the hot couples though).

Nonetheless, I wish you all the best in your quest to save your sleeping beauty with a slightly twisted misery angle.

        .. Wait a minute..
