Is it normal that i rub things between my fingers?

When I was 7, I stated rubbing things between my fingers...it's always been tags in clothing, something inside my pillow, or a material. It makes me feel good when I do it, helps me go to sleep but I don't know why I do it or why I even started doing it. I don't know if it's normal either. It's like a habit for when I feel tired, exhausted, watching movies or etc. I need opinions on it because I don't know if it's normal or not.

My 12 y.o. daughter had this same behavior. After numerous discussions with her pediatrician and child psychologist, we all concluded it was a self-soothing behavior due to anxiety and worrying about things and/or people in her life. Interestingly, she was a "BIG TIME" pacifier baby. She always had one in her mouth until she was much older than she should have been when she stopped. She always had a very soft Gund baby bear/blanket thinggie that she always had with her (think Linus's blanket). She went through several of those from rubbing the satin edges together and the tags on them between her fingers. In about 1st or 2nd grade, she started rubbing the bottom of her shirts instead since she didn't have her "Buzzie Bear" with her at school.

    It was all anxiety.

Now she is on anti-anxiety medication (and has been for a couple years), and she now only rubs her shirt in extreme anxiety situations which is rarely.

    Hope that helps.

It's your version of fidgeting I guess. It's totally normal though
