It's not abnormal but don't engage in it. Online dating is almost always a disaster and the few fringe cases that are successful are so few and far between and are very unique cases (usually two socially awkward dorks, and more power to them). Be their friend if you want but stifle these feelings, it'll lead to pain and regret in the end.
I used to all the time as a teenager. Now I develop feelings not as easily as then so it never happens. I'd say its normal.
