Is it normal that i can't watch modern movies and series?

I was born in '99 but I have this hatred for modern entertainment. Newest stuff I can bring myself to watch were made before 2010. The demeanor of the characters, the way the stories are written, everything about movies and series from the late 2010s until now makes me so annoyed. It's like I'm watching an hour long ad. But instead of trying to sell me a cool product, they're trying to sell me the screenwriter's stupid opinions.
Even the posters make me cringe.
On the other hand I love stuff made from the 1950s til 1990s. I feel like screenwriters were more creative and actually made an effort to entertain people, and now they're not even trying. Older people don't seem to have a problem with watching the newer stuff though. I don't want to sound arrogant and "not like other gen Zs", I really can't help feeling like that about modern stuff. It's a gut feeling that tells me "this is lame and you shouldn't be watching it".

You are generally correct about the quality of many of the modern movies and series. But, there are exceptions where the old standards hold.

My favorite movies of recent years: (I hope you enjoy them)
    - Alita - Battle Angle
    - Knives Out

My favorite mini-series: The Queen's Gambit

The attention to detail in The Queen's Gambit was totally amazing. Example: not only is every chess match a real chess game that people who know chess can follow (you do not need to know anything about chess to enjoy the movie - the movie's not about chess) every chess board that you see in the background in various scenes have real chess games set up on them (not just pieces randomly placed on the board). The clothing and music was spot on for the years the series portrays.

It's exhausting how many movies and TV series come out each year whose sole purpose for having been made was so the writers could shit their unsolicited opinions down your throat

It's all part of the desensitizing, programing, and indoctrination agenda. Normally left leaning, however, you'll see some far right stuff as well. I guess they are trying to fight back, but it just makes everything terrible and the agenda becomes more of the show than the actual story or plot. Even commercials, I've seen quite a few lately that after watching, I've actually asked, what was that commercial for because the product got lost in the agenda driven script. You also have to wonder why a peronies commercial during childrens programming or on cartoon channels. No other reason but to desensitize or to get 5 year olds thinking about sexual stuff.

I watched Disney’s sword in the stone the other day and I found the cel painted backgrounds so relaxing.

I watch mostly older stuff too. What strikes me the most is how dumbed-down things have gotten over the years. People are so fucking stupid these days that nearly every plot and dialog is at like a 4th grade level or less. Even one of my favorite shows, Columbo, became ridiculous in the latter seasons for having to cater to idiots.

I was born in 1999 too, and yeah, you're right. Everything nowadays seems to have an agenda, and it annoys the hell outta me. Not just movies and TV-series, but also videogames.

There's many good new series still being made.
Movies, not so much. It seems anyone can become an actor nowadays and all the movies that come out are basically low effort remakes of old movies and recycled ideas that have been executed better in the past.
There are very few modern good movies.

I wonder why that is? Why is the new generation of actors not as good as the previous?

      • Whoever hires actors had better standards before

Maybe they pick actors more based on their looks nowadays and less on skill? Kinda like the music industry?

          • Yeah, probably. It seems like that they're discriminating against older actors too.

Yeah I know this comment is old, but why does the age of the person matter? Am I not allowed to prefer 70s movies over ones from 2022 because I wasn't born then? It should be obvious to anyone, no matter their age, that the state of entertainment isn't what it used to be. It's unoriginal and infested with political correctness. It's not my subjective opinion, it's objective fact. And no, having this opinion doesn't mean that I think I was born in " le wrong generation ", because the old shit is still available.

It doesn’t matter really. It’s not a hard criticism.

It’s more that I cringe at it being a very typical, cliched thing to say these days. It’s up there with the “I love the 90s so much” even though they never saw it in the first place type of garbage you hear from this generation.

I kinda agree to be honest. I think the reason why zoomers think like this is because of how millennials have been glamorizing it themselves so much that they've been indoctrinated to think like that too. And easier access to old things through the internet is also a contributing factor. Interestingly, my mom told me that she was like this about the 60s in the 80s, despite being born in the 70s.

I think that’s a pretty good take, you may well be right on the money there.

Not just movies look at othr stuff back in the 50s. If you bought a pair of boots they were beautifully hand crafted with real leather none of that made in china synthetic stuff. The cars had sleek sexy designs. Even the trains had nice lounge areas where now its all cramped to turn the maximum profits. The airlines were way nicer. The cities were kept clean and ppl dressed up to go out. People seemed to take pride in what they produced.

What about architecture? I've always liked older architecture more, especially the things from before WW1.
