Is it normal i have the urge to hit my pets?

I have a cat and a dog. I got the cat when I was a little kid. Back then I'd hit him, and abuse him, and come up with different ways too. And I was only 8. Even with my first cat I did that. And I was under 8.

I grew into a teenager..and kept doing it.. Now we have a dog. And at first I was scared of him, because I had a dog bite me when I was little, and then I got use to him. I like to annoy him, and when he shows me his teeth, I get pissed off, and smack his head. I feel horrible afterwords. And I feel way worse for my cat. He had to go through that for years! His whole damn life!

It's just they're so cute I love to annoy them and have the urge to hit them... And I really hate this. I don't want to hear "you're a bad person" I kind of noticed -_-

I know I shouldn't have pets when I grow up, and I wonder if maybe these feelings will go away when I'm on my own. But it's going to really fucking suck, because I always wanted pets. Is there a way to fix this urge? I'm too scared to tell anyone. And I feel really bad for my pets. And I don't know why do I do these things, it scares me..

Please no hateful comments, I just want some advice on how to control myself.

I have the exact same issue and finally decided to google for answers and found myself here. So, yeah we're having the exact same problem. I also feel like my mom loves my dog way more . I hit him a lot but not hard . Though it makes me mad at myself and guilty as fuck. He is very sweet ,and loving ..but i find it all the more reason to hit him. I'm so fucked lmao

same, but two years later. did you find any answers? i have a dog who just recently delivered puppies. a few days ago the pups were making a bunch of noise and i was so pissed cause i was working from home i had the urge to hit those poor pups. luckily i didnt, but before my dog was pregnant id hit her. right after taking out my anger on her she'd immediately forgive me. now i have a new kitten, she helped me a lot in the beginning with my depression but now i started hitting her just like i did with my dog. i cant handle myself properly and im not sure how to fix this. i hope you found the right answers for yourself. i really dont want to give my pets away i love and adore them but i just dont want to hurt them. ive also been thinking that maybe this is also just a human instinct just like how it is with cats. cats have an instinct to hit or bite when they get annoyed, just like how we are. i dont know honestly. it makes me sick of telling someone i personally know since theyd probably tell me to go to a therapist or the damn shrink. i dont want any of those fancy addicting meds.

See a counselor. It is not ok to hit an animal. They most likely love you. You don't want to hurt what you love, do you?

I know it's fun to sometimes annoy your pets, but of course their going to get pissed. Wouldn't you? When your dog shows you his teeth, he's basically saying "Dude you're fucking annoying me. Can you stop?" I'd say to just calm down, and if it annoys you when they show their teeth; go in another room for a while, or don't annoy them. Remember if someone catches you hitting your animals, you could go to jail. Please don't hit your poor cat. If you hit him in the wrong places he could get broken bones, harmed organs, ect. If you can get over hitting them and getting mad, I think you could probably have animals when you're older.

When I was about 8, I used to like hurting my mice. I even drowned one, after I killed it I never hurt another animal again. Never. I remember feeling terrible about it, I even tried to pump it's chest with my fingers trying to bring it back to life.
I think you'd be surprised how common your behavior is, and the fact that you feel bad makes me think there's something else wrong. Do you have feelings like you've got no control in life or is someone dominating you? Hurting animals could be your way of trying to deal with feeling powerless.
You feel bad about what you do, so you're no sicko. I think it has something to do with other emotional problems.

    • I actually get sexually aroused by being dominated. Lol, but, I don't think that has anything to do with. I do feel jealous of my pets sometimes. Like they get way more love from my parents than me. That might be it?

Just get into em mate! Kick the living shit out of them! When they look at you with the total contempt that they do so often, just such them in the head multiple times. Don't let then get the better of you, eye gouge them he you get in too close.

    • Why do you assume I'm a guy?

      Comment Hidden ( show )
        -
      • Because this type of behaviour is very rare in women.

I killed several rabbits as a (9 years old) kid, strangled them. I lost the urge after we moved house, but I remain unable to "feel bad" for my actions.

I find it very strange that you'd speak out and "want help" as people like us don't really care about their actions or stopping them. I can easily talk about this on the net to the "nobody people" but no way in hell would I say this to my parents or my psychologist. IIN is a great dumping ground for my sins.

        • I think more women do it, than you think. They just like to hide it.

I DO feel bad about it. VERY bad. But when I was little I ran over a bird with my bike because I was curios to see the insides, and the blood.

I think gender has nothing to do with this. Just how crazy you are. Anybody can be crazy.

            Comment Hidden ( show )
          • Yes women certainly do it, but it's not a pathology often found in them.

"But when I was little I ran over a bird with my bike because I was curios to see the insides"

You know, a childhood friend of Jeffery Dahmer said that when they were fishing once Jeff pulled out a pocket knife and slashed a fish to pieces.
Shocked, he asked Jeffery "what did you do that for?" Jeffery replied "I just wanted to see what it looked like"

            Spooooooky.

"I think gender has nothing to do with this. Just how crazy you are. Anybody can be crazy."

Both things have nothing to do with it, people with such proclivities are very rarely crazy. Most animal abusers are sadists and/or people within the scope of anti-social disorder, almost always absent of psychosis. That's why serial killers never successfully plead insanity.

          • I see a head doctor every month. He says that I'm almost a "textbook" hedonistic-narcissist.

He told me that anti social (sociopathy) personality is more extreme and doesn't fit me.

            The real difference being:

Sociopaths have little conscience because they simply never had a real one to begin with.

A narcissist has little conscience because they know it gets in the way of what they want.

Hmm... I'll have to make note of that. I have a friend who self identifies as a narcissist. He hasn't been formally diagnosed as I assume he's happy with his with presumed self diagnosis but I do recall hearing him say he doesn't feel guilty for things he does wrong. He also says he doesn't tend to get embarrassed.

I'm a practicing Catholic so I don't mind feeling guilty and examining my conscience. Hell, as long as it doesn't manifest in codependent behavior.

My apologies, it's the use of T9 auto text and the 3x4 phone pad + insomnia. To a Queenslander the term mate is asexual. 'Just such them in the head' should read 'just punch them in the head' and 'don't let then' should be , 'don't let them' and 'eye gouge them he' should read 'eye gouge them if'.
Although violent behaviour or desires thereof are more prevalent in men, I know a number of extremely violent women, all related.

Don't keep your pets then it won't give you an urge to hit them because you won't have any pets to hit! Imagine how they feel! It's sad and cruel what you are doing and you must have psychological problems to get random urges to do this..... You are probably taking your anger out on them because they are easy, innocent targets

You wouldn't go to jail. Honestly the meds would be a lot better than hurting animals.
I am on some meds for different reasons and the effects of me - not- on them is worse than the effects of being on them.

Have you been abused? Is there something that has made you this way? If you really feel as bad as you say you do then, rehome your animals, as you are making excuses against every suggestion. You don’t want to take medication incase it damages your health? Maybe your dog doesn’t want to live in an abusive home. I can only hope that your dog bites you one day and you learn a lesson, because it will adventually. I think you are quite aware that this behaviour is rather sick

Hope you're doing well with you pets. I had this experience once or twice when I actually enjoyed hitting my dog (yes I was a cruel girl then) and did terrible things. That was one short period. After that, I never did such things to her and tried to treat her well and lovingly. My dog died almost five years ago after living 13 years and accompanying me through the sad teenage years - my family, including me fed her well and did not do terrible things to her after. Not trying to excuse myself from the cruel things I did, just miss her so much and hope I could be there with her when she died. Until today, I still feel desperately sad recalling the moments when I hit her and mistreated her (I cannot describe what I did, too terrible for a cute young puppy). She was such a lovely creature and she needed, loved (or at least liked) me. Now, I have NO CHANCE to ever give her a happy life, never. No dog will ever be her. Looking back, I think one of the factors that contributed to my cruel behavior was my grandma's. She did not welcome the dog (makes sense as she truly does not need another creature to care for after raising five kids of an irresponsible man) and constantly hit her when she pooped or peed in wrong places. Besides, my parents' education to me included violence when things did not go their way. Were you treated badly by your family or did one of your family member not welcome the pets? Your reply was six years ago, hope you've walked out from the experience.

So see a therapist already! I only mentioned a priest because it sounded like you were concerned about confidentiality. But honestly, nowadays animal cruelty laws are getting stricter and acts that used to be misdemeanors are now felonies. Here in Nevada there have already been several cases where minors have been charged with felonies for animal cruelty. I understand that you don't want an increase or change in your medications but that's better than you continuing to abuse animals and eventually killing them. Studies show that people who hurt animals eventually go on to hurt people. I'm so sorry you are going through this ordeal and having these awful urges. But it's really commendable that you're admitting to having these problems because it's true that most people who do these things don't seek help until they are required to by a judge. It's none of my business but I'm curious as to your diagnosis. I'm guessing some kind of personality disorder. I hope you get the help you need.

Please see a therapist and or seek some kind of spiritual help with a pastor. This stuff is really dark. The good thing is that it sounds like you feel bad afterwards but you still need help.

I remember having 2 pet mice when I was 14/15yrs old and doing bad things to them after having them for a while. I would take them outside both in one hand and throw them in the air while watching them hug each other in terror as they went up. I would catch them 95% of the times but sometimes they would land hard on the grass. I think one of them injured his foot and couldn't walk right.
