Is it normal for me to get mad when someone says “everything will be okay?”

Every time somebody says “Everything will be okay,” it makes me so irritated and annoyed. Everything WON’T be okay and I’m gonna need you to be a bit more realistic. I’m not gonna pretend everything’s fine when it isn’t. That won’t solve anything. I know they’re trying to make me feel better, but it really isn’t helping. Also, yes I know a negative mindset is bad. But again, I’m not pretending everything is fine.

What would you prefer they say, if anything.

I say it because otherwise I’d just be silent with a blank expression.

Depends on what we're talking about. In most cases, everything really WILL be okay. It's not trying to say that everything will be perfect, just that you will make it through. Of course, in my mind, that statement is usually accompanied by an unspoken plan and not just blissful optimism.

I wouldn't say it in regards to bigger issues, though, like imminent incarceration, or cancer, or grievous bodily injury. If I'm laying in a hospital bed, the only person I want to hear that line from is the doctor.

I see where you’re coming from. I’ve realised I prefer “I’ll handle it” to “everything will be ok”.
