Is it ever okay to admit that you're emo if you truly are one?

So for some reason, many people say that true emos never call themselves emo. Meaning that true emos aren't like allowed to admit that they're emo.

When it comes to the question of who is a true emo or just a poser emo, it's pretty easy to know that which is the true one and which is the fake one.

So if some person's taste in fashion, personality traits, taste in music, lifestyle, etc. match pretty much all of the criteria of the emo subculture, why is it not okay for them to admit that they're emo? That's when a person would be emo. All of the most important traits matching the criteria of the emo subculture.

I'm not emo myself, and I also don't really want to be one, because I just want to be myself, but it kind of frustrates me how there are many true emos that get called "posers" just because they admit that they're emo. It's almost as if such subculture would be some religion or political movement, or some secret agent group where the agents are instructed to not reveal their true identity.

I was emo back when I was 14 though. And of course, most people did see me as an emo as well, but few haters, who weren't even emos themselves, called me a "poser".

Well some people never grow out of that awkward phase.
The rest of us remain emo on the inside..... But we develop better fashion skills LOL.

Dear god please dont look up to that girl. The only reason she has followers is because people keep checking back to see if shes dead yet.

You may not be an ostrich but, by God, that doesn't mean you shouldn't be proud to be an emu.

I thought the word emo died 15 years ago

Why does some 14 year-olds’ definition of emo annoy you so much?

Especially if you’re now “18” and old enough to be on IIN?

    • I'm actually way older than 18, and not everybody who called me a poser were 14 that time.

As for me being annoyed by some people who call certain true emos as "posers", well, I guess I just dislike fundamentalism, and I think there can be fundamentalism in some fashion subcultures too.

Then again, perhaps fundamentalism is the wrong word, but you know, I mean those people who always are like "you are not ____ enough if you ____".

        • Or maybe "holier-than-thou" would be the word.

Hearing the word emo just takes me back to my highschool days. After high school(graduated in 2006)I wore emo and goth style clothing until I was 23. I identified as neither. I just liked the fashion. I still wear goth style clothes sometimes though and I'm 31 now. XD

Um I'm gonna assume you mean judge there. No I'm not. I judge people off what they say to me and do. Not how they present themselves or dress.

Are Goth and Emo the same?

They both belong to the punk rock scene. Emofocuses on emotional expression, and abstract waves of sonic dissonance. Gothicrock as a genre of rock music involves expression of emotional themes through introverted/extroverted methods in music, art, media, literature, fashion, poetry, etc.

    • Yeah but of course, goth and emo are pretty different when it comes to fashion.

Not saying that goths are like old fashioned or anything, and there are different types of goth styles, but goth fashion often has elements of like 1800s or earlier styles, and goths can often be very fancy looking, while emo has pretty much a modern urban look, some emo fashion elements being sort of 80s-like.

You're supposed to be enlightened and extra understanding to everyone elses choices, remember? Kind of like you expect people to be to trans people.

Yeah I hate people who are like that. While you should be proud for what you like and who you are, it's not like you've really accomplished anything incredible just by being really into something. So if you think you're better than other people just for being more into that thing than them then you're an idiot. Plus that rule of not saying you're emo just sounds like one of those made up rules that those idiots use to feel even more superior.

Emo is over. I was emo in high school. That was like 10 years ago. Most Emo’s from back then are now normies, and a percentage have graduated to Goth. Goth people nowadays are comfortable labelling themselves that. But pre-2005 it was pretty uncool to label yourself.

Okay, so I hate labels and if you want to be you then be you if someone calls you emo than whats the problem your being YOU thats just their opinion. I get called goth and emo but I just leave it be and let them have their opinion you know who are.
    Thats all that matters.

What the fuck is an "emo" anyways? I feel like it some poorly defined slang that people call themselves just to call themselves something cool sounding.
