Is 50 as old as it used to be years ago?

I notice many 50 year olds act 25-35 and dress it too. Is 50 different now than years ago?

Old age has become a bit frowned-upon you could say.

Yeah, it's not as old as it used to be. We currently live in a time where you're not too old to dress a certain way, own a certain type of car, enjoy certain types of hobbies, and you're not too old to go back to college and get an education.

    Age wise, yes.

Mentally, its now common for people to still be having a lot of fun in their lives. I'm in my mid 60's and I still have a lot of fun and have not slowed down much due to age (a few health conditions prevent me from doing some of the things I did when I was younger).

Are you implying people years ago didn't have fun or enjoy life after 50 or 60.

Maybe you're just looking at it with older eyes.

I see more kids, 20 something's that think there's no life after 40 or 50 today than twenty or thirty years ago. I had a whole group of people(family) around me 30 years ago that retired in their early to mid 50s and seemed to be enjoying themselves rather well.

Today I'm in a generation if we retire, it will be much later, closer to 70, and you may feel working keeps you younger but it's not my idea of fun.

Yes I am... I have observed a dramatic change over life in the 1960's to 1970's when I was a teenager to now.

The mortality tables show it as well. In 1960 the average adult had a life expectancy of 69. In 2018 it is 79 (2018 being the last year in the currently publicized CDC Chart).

One of the major changes is tobacco use. Unfortunately I could not find a really good chart on that. I did find that the current cigarette use is about 15% of the population (which excludes cigars, pipes, and marijuana).

I did find the information that total tobacco use per person in the USA has declined to 1/3 of the 1960 level to now.

With that you can project that about 45% of the adult population smoked cigarettes in 1960. Both of my grandfathers smoked pipes.

Every hospital had people in it with lung cancer or severe emphysema. I knew older people who lived with smokers all their lives that had their own version of smokers cough.

Many older adult smokers had clear lung problems and were not very healthy (have you ever looked at how someone looks who has smoked all of their lives). They did not do the kind of things that most adults of the same age do today.

People now have replacement knees and hips as well, and many other medical improvements.

So yes, today's older people are in better health and more vibrant than the older people of the 1960's and 1970's. Look up the mortality tables and the history of cigarette use in the USA (which has the best statistics) if you don't believe what I saw with my own eyes.

I'll give you personal health has improved, and tobacco use, I agree is way down. However drug use (including mj) and alcoholism has actually increased.

I guess it all depends on how you take this question.

My first reply was based on your initial reply about having fun.
Living longer and being in better physical shape at 70 or 80 does not mean they're having more fun.

I've seen a change in how younger people treat their elders in the last 20 to 40 years. Once you cross 50 or so the younger gen just seem to want to throw you away.

I cant tell you how many parents and grandparents haven't seen their family in years.
The World used to be so much about family, and fun for a lot of parents and grandparents is about seeing their kids and grandkids.

I've watch numerous family members and others live longer lives not nessesarily quality life.

At least four that I have been directly involved with could/should have died up to 5 years earlier but they dwindled away making the Drs and medical system rich while raping every bit of their money and putting them in the poor house and even leaving the family members that would get involved with unbelievable debt.

That's all part of those average life span statistics your talking about. Which by the way from what I've read lately the ALS in the US has actually declined in the last two years.

I know a lot of elderly that would trade that senior gethering at the community center or even the Cruise for a simple visit from family or a family gathering.

The second part of the question from the op talks of dress or act younger. Again I agree because of medical we're able to be more active, but I think the act and dress is a direct result of needing to feel viable and/or needed before they get thrown away.

Btw, I'm am very glad and prowd of you for still being active, involved intellectually, and having fun. Please look around and get a few of them outcast seniors involved in the things you're doing.

          😊. Sorry so long!

I understand your concern about the elderly and lack of younger family interest or care. I'm one of 8 children. 3 of them lived closer to our parents. 1 of them visited somewhat regularly, and 1 on rare occasions. I visited often, and was the "responsible" child that took care of things for them for their last decades; which was weekly or more frequent visits for the last year of my mom's life. Then I spent 10 days 24/7 with my mother at the end (and she died holding my hand - in 2019). I arranged the funeral, and also the burial in 2020 when her ashes came back from the Medical School (both my dad and mom had donated their bodies to the medical school for education or research).

Not everyone came to the funeral either...

You are right that I should get more involved with more elderly. I still feel I'm recovering from being a caretaker and enjoying my freedom after that (within the limits of Covid-19).

A minor point: Alcohol and drug use is not up much, if at all, among the older generation. It is up among those that are younger. But, noting like how many smoked before the mid 1970's.

Sorry and my condolences to you for the loss of your parents.

I lost mine early, 03 and 04, luckily all three of their children were involved as much as possible. Two from a far. I did the eulogy at both. Hard to do.

Both were fairly small compared to what I remember of grandparents funerals mainly because the family is spread out all over the world as compared to all living in about a 50km range.

I don't know about US but the mj use here, old or young doesn't matter I'd bet it's 60% or more.
The younger smoke it older eat it. The elderly here have always looked down on those that actually get drunk and stupid. You grow up with alcohol and use it responsibly. But that seems to be changing with the younger gen.

Btw the feelings from the loss does ease up over time, never goes away but gets easier to look back and remember.

Dressing or ACTING young may just be an impact of needing to keep yourself viable in the work force.

I'm almost 50 but I dress, I guess, more as a younger person. Not ridiculously young, but like 90s-00s style without the pegged jeans. I don't think I could pull off skinny jeans, but I think I look good.

I’d say they’re older. Everyone is useless now.

People need to accept their age. Like the backwards hats. It is cool when you're 15. But when you're 30 you look like a fool.
