In trouble for "returning" food pantry peanut butter to grocery store?

I took an unopened peanut butter that I got from food pantry, and I tried to "return" it to the grocery store. I tried to tell her that I lost the receipt. Yes, I realize now it was fucking stupid of me. The customer service rep right away saw the bar code crossed out with marker (which I fucking stupidly didn't see until she pointed it out), she obviously wouldn't accept it, and I sure as fuck could tell that she was suspicious. Do you think she's now going to the police about it? There was actually an officer standing nearby when this happened, but she never called him over or anything while I was there, and there were a couple of customers in line behind me. Do you think as soon as she finished helping the customers behind me, that she went to the officer standing nearby, or that she went and called the police, and that I'll be hearing back about this?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • Have a PBJ and relax, the cops aren’t coming for you for a jar of Skippy.
Honesty is the best policy, just keep that in mind.

If they were going to, they would have confronted you as you left the store. Forget about it and put it behind you. Stay out of trouble. It ain't worth it.

Are you that hard up that you steal from a food bank and then try to get money from a store for it? How big of a junkie are you? That is the only reason I can think of why someone would steal from a food bank.

Why didn't you want the nutbutter?

    • Because I was just trying to be a petty little criminal and not a sick pervert. What I did yesterday, and shoplifting a couple of times like a candybar and bottle of aspirin is the furthest that I've ever reached into the criminal world. And I think I'm a fucking idiot now for even doing that.

Doubt it. There are bigger fish to fry. Consider it a lesson learned and straighten up.

    • Whether there are bigger fish to fry or not depends on where you are. I'm not somewhere like New York or Detroit, I'm in a not-so-high crime suburban area where the police most likely may not always have anything better to do.

So set a fire on the other side of town to distract them.

You are probably on the FBI's watch list now. Better not admit to any other serious crimes on the internet.

no , no law was broken. its not illegal to make a return. store policies are not laws, they never were. they are suggestions .

Incorrect. It is absolutely illigal to try and defraud a store out of money by returning an item you didn't actually purchase from the store. Most stores wouldn't want to be bothered over a jar of peanut butter, but if it was higher end item, they may well have called the authorities.

what is the law? WHO PASSED IT , what town is it illegal in and is it still in effect?

These are incredibly stupid questions because it is not illigal in just one town and obviously I am not going to look up the specific statute or it's history in every possible jurisdiction in the US. While the language may vary in different jurisdictions, this is commonly referred to as Return Fraud and would be considered a form of fraud, larceny, and/or theft in every jurisdiction in the US and I suspect most other countries. People have been prosecuted for it. Feel free to Google Return Fraud. Do you honestly believe that it is legal to attempt to defraud a person or business out of money? Seriously?

No you are out of touch with reality if you believe stealing money from stores with fake returns is legal.

    • But is it illegal to go to store and make an obvious attempt to try to "return" something that obviously was given to me free from the food pantry?

no its not. to be illegal you must break a real law no some imaginary one.

I think he is correct since you didn't steal the jar, but just be more sensible and remember this in the future.

Just for future reference most places can use the bar code to tell them a lot of information. Like if you bought it from that franchise, if you bought it at all, what store, and when. I wouldn't try that to often.

I know you didn't buy it. I was saying you shouldn't try that to often because they can figure out if your trying to steal from them.

        • I won't try it again. The anxiety I have now of the police showing up at my door because of my retarded move will keep me from doing it again.

            • I will. I guess now that probably nothing will happen, but still, I've known people have gotten busted for that type of scamming shit, but it was also usually something more than a jar of peanut butter. But still, I won't try this again
