everybody goes through times when they think about death. It is a very scary thing to think about mostly because we don't know what happens when we die. The fear of the unknown is one of the scariest fears that exists. but sweetie, let me ask you this, if you are spending a lot of your time thinking about death and the future, what are you missing today? if I learned anything, it is this. The past and the present are ok to think about, but you have to concentrate more on the now because that is whats most important. if you spend all your time thinking about death, then you missing all the little great things about life. Like cherishing the time we have with the people that we love. instead of thinking about death every day, think "what can I do today that can make me happy and make my life the best life I can possibly live."

    When I was 21
    yo old I used t
o think of death and it would scare me. How
would I die, when, will I be painful?. I spent many nights worrying about it, then at the age of 24 some friends and I went on a camping trip in mountains of eastern oregon. I was in one car with a friend, while the other group followed behind. Now this is shortly before winter started but in the higher elevations on oregon it snow all the time, being from cali I never knew any of this. So anyway 5 miles from our campsite we hit a patch of black ice, went off road and hit a tree. After that everything went black and the most peaceful feeling came over me. Words alone can not began to express what it felt
like. I felt no fear or pain or sadness, just pe
ace. Anyway I work up two weeks later in a portland oregon hospital with broken bones
and missing one leg. I later learned that I was pretty much dead when we reached the ER. I know what I feels like to be scared of death, but that day changed me. Don't fear it, it will happen to us all and worrying about it won't add a another day to your life. Shit, I had to die in order to live!

the fantasy of hell is just something the church created to draw fear in peoples hearts so they could keep control.you should never b afraid to die because when you die u r aware of nothing and feel nothing.also death covers over all sins. if you really believe in god then you need to believe that if hes supposed to be so merciful why would he condemn you in torture for an eternity. its ridiculous and pointless

I disagree with you about Hell being a fantasy to scare people. It is mentioned in the bible several times of the existence of Hell & Jesus died on the cross to forgive us all and all you have to believe is that Jesus DID die for us all. But I think it is quite normal to be afraid of dying. Not too many people can honestly say that they arent afraid.

I don't believe Jesus died for me. Why would I? There's NO proof and for something to base my life on, there sure as shit has GOT to be proof.

Besides, I never asked him to die for me.

Death is inevitable and you must accept this because someday it WILL happen. But now is not the time to dwell on it.

You are only given one life to live so spending it in fear of death is a waste. You have no control of when your death will be so live your live to the fullest.

Atheist here so sorry but I don't believe in heaven nor hell so I can't help you there. But I would not worry about that at all.

  • Thanatophobia, or fear of death, is a relatively complicated phobia. Many, if not most, people are afraid of dying. Some people fear being dead, while others are afraid of the actual act of dying. However, if the fear is so prevalent as to affect your daily life, then you might have a full-blown phobia. Many people’s fear of death is tied into their religious beliefs, particularly if they happen to be going through a period of questioning. Some people think that they know what will happen after death, but worry that they may be wrong. Some believe that the path to salvation is very straight and narrow, and fear that any deviations or mistakes may cause them to be eternally condemned.Religious beliefs are highly personalized, and even a therapist of the same general faith may not fully understand a client’s beliefs. If the fear of death is religiously based, it is often helpful to seek supplemental counseling from one’s own religious leader. However, this should never be used to replace traditional mental health counseling. Thanatophobia may also have roots in fears of the unknown. It is part of the human condition to want to know and understand the world around us. What happens after death, however, cannot be unequivocally proven while we are still alive. People who are highly intelligent and inquisitive are often at greater risk for this type of thanatophobia, as are those who are questioning their own philosophical or religious beliefs.

It's not important that you die. Lots of people have done it, and no one gets out of this life alive.
What's important is what you do with the little bit of time you have left.

I'm a christian, and supposed to not be scared of death, and excited about meeting God or whatever, but i'm REALLY scared about it! I keep worrying, what if my whole religion is wrong, and even though there really is a heaven and hell i go to hell instead of heaven? or what if re incarnation is real, and i turn into something like an ugly person or an animal or something? or what if after i die i just lay there, awake and aware, but can't move? it'd suck!! i'm not supposed to think like that, since i'm a christian and "have no reason to be afraid" but what if my pastor's...wrong? because, there'd have to be a whole lot of other wrong religions for mine to be right, who's to say mine really is the right one?

There's no avoiding it. Don't worry about it. Just live life to the fullest every day. I believe in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. I believe in God and heaven. You should go to a local church and get involved. Once you have found your faith, you won't fear it anymore. You won't look forward to it but you won't be afraid.

With my seizures, I don't fall over and froth at the mouth - instead, my sense of self disappears as I watch; usually in horror. I think I can safely say that I have died hundreds and hundreds of times. Imagine the most insane paradox being played right before your eyes, and then imagine being sucked into it. Since you will only die once, I think you'll probably find death to be a pretty fascinating experience...not a scary one. As far as the afterlife is concerned, my opinion is that "you" probably won't be the one experiencing it, so don't worry! ^^

I'm scared shitless of death, and I feel bad for every death really, and I do know that at least a hundred people have died while I type this message, and I'm a fast typer so...

Well I don't believe in god or heaven or hell, and if I did I think I wouldn't be so scared of death, because what is there to fear? I don't think I would have much respect for life though either if I knew that those that were good go to heaven and those that were bad go to hell, where they deserve.

Do you remember being born? Probably not, right? Well, I don't think dying will be that dramatic for you either. So many people think 'death' is going to be like this significant phase in their lives, like marriage, or losing one's virginity, going away to college, etc. The truth is: you could just be going to get some potatoes one day and a motorcycle will slam into you - you'll be flipped four times, land on the cement, crack your skull and exhale your last right there, just like that. Big deal!

  • Many levels here:

    1) the supernatural and an afterlife in heaven or hell ... personally beyond the mystery of what lies ahead, if anything, that's a stretch for me. But if it is a matter of faith for you, as it is for many, then you probably want to do what you need to to get to heaven.

    2) the existential ... people can deny their anxiety about death as much as they like, but it is here, in the present, as much a reality of the moment as is life, and often defining life. So if you can make anxiety about death a determination to live well, as others have suggested, then good. Just don't paint a stupid happy face over it and deny that it is an issue.

    3) corporeal reality ... since it is inevitable, fear of how we will die and pain is pretty realistic & one of the biggest fears. Anyone with life experience knows it can be a pretty awful experience, despite medical advances & braggadocio about "pain management." Assisted suicide? Hemlock Society? There's real merit in wanting to control when & how you die and not just leaving it to nature and other people imposing their fucked up values on your last moments.

jesus, the nutcase who thought he could "save" the world, died.

dont believe in ridiculous child stories.

the bible has so many contradictions, they even have 2 floods.

and of course, god, all knowing, all wise, knew of only 3 continents--as notated in the bible.

its a fraud. use common sense, read a science book.

Dude, back when God made the earth, there probably was only 3 continents... duh. Our earth is ever changing. Plate tectonics, continents collide and then break apart. There used to be one continent called Pangaea too. Science proves God's existence. God knows all about this. And you just made the best point possible. What is 80 some years on earth compared to an eternity in heaven? This life is just the blink of an eye. This is our chance to love God with all our hearts and join Him in heaven. He doesn't want us all to die, He wants us to live! That's why the bible exists. If God hated us He would never have provided a savior to take the blame for us. He would have left us wondering how we got here and what the heck we're supposed to do. But He didn't, He saved us. All you have to do is confess with your mouth that Jesus is your savior, that He died on the cross and God raised Him from the dead, and that He took your punishment upon Himself so you could be free and not worry about death. Believe that truthfully in your heart and man death sounds stinkin awesome now! To fall asleep with Christ in your heart is the ultimate goal! And It is by His grace that we are saved.

read up on darwinism. i will summarize:

    1) more creatures are born than can possibly survive due to limited resources, etc.
    2) characteristics of some creatures enhance likelihood for reproduction.

    3) those that can reproduce are evolutionary successes. those that cannot, their line dies forever with them.

in sum, there are no rules to life. no guarantees. what you are born with, you have. forever and ever.

in short, you will die. i will die.

    who cares?

religion is a fraud--science has so disproven religion, its not even discussed.

if you are looking for the meaning of life, etc., you should open a science book--read up on evolution (darwins dangerous idea).

that is a good place to start.

who cares if you are afraid to die? you will only die once anyways. and then you are gone forever.

and when you die, you are only remembered via the memories of others. and then when they die, you die.

I know this is an old topic, but i read all the comments and i would like to write my experience as well.

On my 17s till my 20s i used to think a lot about ''religion, the meaning of life, where we will go when we die?'' stuff like that, so i was checking in internet about solutions, answers etc. etc. i started getting really scared i couldn't even sleep for weeks,i was getting drunk in order to avoid it,after i mixed all these ''answers'' i found myself in deepshit,i stopped worrying about my life,my body, whether i die or not, it was like my brain was switched off the real world and i was just a ''living body''

After that, in my thoughts i wanted so much with all my might to find the meaning of life and death so one day it was when i started observing plants, insects every living being, i was observing nature, every living being which from my younger age i was respecting life no matter what it is, because i found that life is really precious,i saw in nature a link to everything,so i started thinking what if we all are the same person but we dont know it,what if we(nature) are coming from the same thing, what if we are the god?you know life doesn't exist only in this planet, there are trillions of planets with life. so start thinking from this day, that whatever will happen when you die, know this, life continues, it's just as you see the leaves falling from the tree on Autumn and reborn at Spring.

Look everybody, I had this out of body experience when I was having an anxiety attack. This was more then real. I'm telling you hell is worse then you think. Its as if your having an anxiety attack with major depression and failure an despair and you think your dying. However, you can't even kill yourself; its nothing physical at all its just spirit. Eternal; and instead of praying you know you may have to beg to God to take you; although you have a feeling that won't even work. You will have to beg to your evil spirit who controls your soul. You can't kill yourself its eternal kinda slave like. you have to completely submit. Its all eternal forever forever forever.

I had this OBE experience as well,to tell you the truth i thought that i was being attacked by a ghost when i was sleeping,
the feeling was really horrifying, i was sleeping and somehow in my dream a very very loud deformed-woman-voice call it whatever you like it was Screaming in my ears,at the same second something really big and heavy fell on my chest(at first i thought the floor fell on me and i died), the screaming voice was continuing in my ears, i woke up(my eyes were open i mean) i couldn't move but only my head could turn left and right,i turned somehow to the left and my eyes as well, i saw a little girl(around 7yrs i would say) with white or red dress idk exactly i dont remember the colour, but it had black long hair, i tried to see her face but it was blurry, so i couldn't see her face clearly,i believe it was torturing me for real, i got shitted myself so i stopped moving ,stopped thinking, stopped breathing normally,i waited 3 hours like that until morning came, i believed i was being attacked by a ghost for real but meh it was just OBE which later i mean i found answers about it, it was a lot like what i felt.

For all God does for us, it's really nothing just to trust him. Then we get to be in heaven and be happy forever! Also, if I'm right about God (and I know I am), I win, and those who don't believe lose--big time. If I'm wrong, whatever; doesn't matter either way. I was still a good person. So I'm not afraid of death. It's the process of dying I'm a little nervous about.

As for religion they want you to believe in their beliefs so you keep coming back to check in and 'be good' and go to 'their heaven'. Earth is heaven, you are living ON it right now so enjoy it. There is no hell - hell is just a metaphor for 'a place you'd rather not be'. Read Gibran's The Prophet and know YOU are that a little piece of god unto yourself. The story/history of Jesus and all the dietys of all religions are metaphors for you relate to and remind you that you are very important - to you and those who love you -so love them back!

Live your life, with your moral, with your values, don't kill if you were not trained to, don't swear if you were not trained to, do good things, do bad things, always thinking of you before thinking of someone else, love your body, don't hurt it, don't mark it, love yourself, love someone too, marry, leave someone in Earth who can tell your story, your kid, you brother, your sister, your family. And enjoy your life with the person you most love, then let yourself go........

While doing this, never believe in a God or in Evil.

If you die, there's only 2 chances:

    1) Nothing besides who you left talking to the next generations who you were, what you did.
    2) In a million years, humans (If not suicided yet) gonna be able to rebuild bodies by simply taking DNA from a bone. You gonna born again, but I'm not sure they can bring your old brain, your old memories back, you gonna have the same body, similar appearance if no mistakes were done, and you will never remember about your other life, your love, your family.

    THE END

If you can't do this until you die, then you were not worth of living.
