Is it normal to think takeout food tastes better with plastic utensils

when u get inexpensive takeout i feel like the food is just better if u use the given plastic utensils instead of metal utensils from home cuz that just ruins the takeout-ness of the food u kno

I dunno about all of that mess, but I always use chopsticks whenever I eat Asian food. Using a fork with Asian food would ruin it for me.

I'm Asian and I strongly agree with the sentiment of eating Asian food with chopsticks :^)

Thank you very much! I've been only using chopsticks for Asian food since a was a tiny, little kid. My dad taught me how to use chopsticks after he came back from Vietnam! πŸ’“πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘πŸ»

I'm fifty years old now, and I guess I feel like this is one thing in life where I've managed to keep good manners. πŸ˜‡

Maybe it's because it adds on to the fact that you didnt make the food. Everyone knows that food tastes better when they dont make it. Eating with plastic forks takes this feeling of eating someone else's food farther.

Theres my 50 cent psychology opion... or sociology dont really know where this is categorically.

I prefer to use plastic utensils with it as well, but mostly because that's less dishes to wash, and if they're there, I'd might as well use them.

I can see how it could make the food taste better, and I agree with LloydAsher that it could be due to the fact that it adds to the fact that you didn't make it, and is a psychological thing.

My weird thing is that I enjoy my drink more when I either use a tiny straw (think those coffee stirrer ones) or bite on a regular sized straw as I'm sipping. For some reason, it's more satisfying if I have to work harder for it, lol. Same with using a spoon to eat/drink a liquid rather than just drinking it from the bowl (which is probably much more mannerly in a restaurant or in front of others, anyway).

  • I know with caviar they use ivory utensils since silver or metal ones affect the taste

Having not used metal utensils for years to having a drawer full, I can tell you there is a metallic taste they lend to your meal

It's also known that drinks packaged in plastic end up integrating "plastic molecules" or whatever when heated up, I'm sure there's a similar effect for food packed in Styrofoam/plastic

To add to Lloyd's psychological evaluation, you may be used to that taste and perceive it as normal. Also when you ingest chemicals (which water is a chemical just to paint a broader picture) your body starts to naturally crave it, like if you eat a lot of fast food you start to crave that big mac, the bun of which is loaded with sugar and the meat being comprised of soy, it's a unique cocktail of ingredients you can't really find elsewhere (sugar is more addictive than crack I believe)

Same with nicotine, for you smokers out there you know what a nic fit is and it's almost like you can feel the lack of nicotine in your system

So it could be you anticipate those chemicals and that's half the vice, cheap low grade but tasty food and the plastic by product you ingest along with it

    • Interesting, yeah. ive also heard that (by contrast) heavier/metallic utensils amplifies the experience of a fancy dinner out or something like that psychologically, which i can also agree with. the addiction/anticipation is interesting as well
