Is it normal to think about self-injury all the time?

I've had issues with self-injury on and off since I was 14 and am 25 now. I only do it maybe 1-4 times per year, and I'm trying to quit, but I have the impulses VERY frequently. Definitely most days, and maybe for a couple hours each day. Honestly the main problem is how time-consuming the thoughts are, as well as the feeling of loneliness because I can't tell people about what's on my mind without them freaking out.

I'm on medication for depression. Is this feeling just something I have to live with?

I also had a problem with this several years ago, but luckily it was fairly short lived (around 6 months or so). Going to counseling was helpful for me, and I think that you should do the same thing. While the fact that you've developed a fairly long term pattern of SI, the fact that your incidents are infrequent is likely to make putting a stop to this dangerous pattern somewhat easier. Also, have you ever told anyone about this problem? If not, you should tell someone you trust about it.

    • Thank you for this detailed comment, it's a relief to talk to someone else who went through the same thing and is doing better now.

A few months ago I told a girl I was dating about it, and she got very panicky so I haven't told anyone since.

I also told my therapist (who I see once a month) that I have problems with self-injury, and I told my psychiatrist (a few years ago, when I had a psychiatrist) that I have issues with intrusive thoughts. I'm not sure I ever talked in detail about the two issues together, though. I should probably do that.

Have you ever seen a therapist who could screen you for Borderline Personality Disorder? Self-mutilation is a major symptom of BPD.

Also it would probably help you to have some cognitive behavioral therapy. You need to learn skills to help you when you have the desire to cut.

    Google DMT and STEPPS.

Go to a heathcare professional and tell them exactly how you
    feel.
They should be able to help with what appear to be intrusive and negative thoughts.
