Is it normal to sexualise women’s body’s

Throughout history in Western society women have been sexualised and sexually harassed. Should we put up with it and accept it as part of Western culture or is it something that we should try to stamp out through education and finding ways to make men more accountable for their behaviour?

Women should not have to put up with this and more should be done to prevent it. 30
It’s not really acceptable but it will never change so women need to find ways to accept it. 9
Women should accept this as part of Western culture 10

Alrighty, so I'm a woman who simply doesn't enjoy putting up with this bullshit.

I like wearing clothes that are flattering to my figure. It makes me feel more confident in myself and it has nothing to do with how men might view me.

Ironically enough dressing more conservatively actually seems to make men(perverted men) more likely to creep on me.

This happened about 5 nights ago...

I was just bored. I only had a few bucks on me and I felt like trying some flavored cigarillos.

I wore some old skinny jeans (this is all that would fit me. I recently got in a horrific car accident and I've lost a lot of weight since then.), and also an oversized hoodie becuase it was a bit chilly out.

I naively thought that this would make me less of a target. I thought that if certain men couldn't see my figure then maybe they wouldn't try to pick on me.

    The opposite was true...

As I walked out of that liqour store I tried to light up these silly cherry flavored cigarillos that I'd just bought, only to hear a man calling out to me.

I looked up and saw a big navy blue van in the furthest corner of the parking lot where a man was calling out to me, his friend in the driver's seat.

This happened at night. It was after 10pm.

He kept talking to me, completely oblivious to the fact that I was just trying to light up my cigar. He didn't give a fuck. He just wanted my attention, I guess.

I was a little freaked out and I tried to walk fast and hurry a long. I couldn't even light my stupid cigar because this situation was throwing me off too much. I was scared.

I walked past theses people and I was waiting for the traffic to stop so I could jay walk across the street the and escape.

My body language no doubt communicated that I was frightened and stand offish. They didn't give even half a flying FUCK though.

As I stood at the sidewalk this man called out to me one more time...

He said "Hey, look over here at what I've got"

Against my better judgement...I froze in place and turned to look at this man.

There was NOTHING! Nothing to look at. Nothing in his hands. He was simply trying to "lure" me towards his van with him and his friend.

I have absolutely no idea what would have happened if I had actually walked towards these people.

I ran across the street moments after that so I could go and be safe in my apartment again, and I heard these men talking to each other(and to me) as I did so.

EVERYTHING about my body language communicated utter terror. I was AFRAID. They didn't care. They seemed amused if anything.

So yeah...it's "normal", I guess, to sexualize women's bodies. I was completely covered though. Ironically enough this increased the harrassment I was receiving.

With my body covered no one could tell I was actually an adult...I resembled jailbait(I look young), and these men thought they could take advantage of that.

When I dress in more adult clothing I receive very little harassment. Even if my outfit is just tad revealing. This tells me that these predatory people don't give a shit about how attractive I am...

They only care about how weak and vulnerable I appear. My sexuality and maturity has little, if anything, to do with it.

So no...Women shouldn't put up with this fucking bullshit. Damned if we do, damned if we don't, ya know?

Keep your fucking eyes to yourself please. You're weldome to look at me or check me out, but not much more than that. Mind your own business...I dress for myself. Nobody else.

is it possible that the confidence you express by wearing more adult/potentially revealing clothing makes predatory people less confrontational themselves? the correlation seems kind of odd and this is the only thing i can think of

        You’re correct, absolutely.

This is all it boils down to...

Confidence=Security. We are all only animals, after all.

Human beings are animals...that means that you and I are animals as well. This isn’t even weird at all honestly. If you’ve been in a Biology class recently then you already get what I mean, I’m sure.

So yeah...you hit the nail in the head! Thank you. My confidence does, indeed, act as a sort of “repellant” to those of us with a predatory nature...

And we should all embrace this. Human beings are STILL animals, through and through. We are, indeed, the most intelligent amongst all animals, but we should still recognize that this DOESN’T make us any different.

We’re all animals. I’m an animal. You’re an animal. Anyone who is reading this is an ANIMAL.

And that’s not even a bad thing! Animals are more than just predatory. Anyone who “owns” a cat already know this. :)

We are all simple to the very core. I know I am, at least. All I know is that, yeah, my confidence does act as protection to me. Confidence can act as protection to anyone else, too. Anybody.

Maybe if I had felt more more confident then this wouldn’t have happened to me. Body language is a “thing”, ya know. It’s not something “mystical” of even “abstract”. It just might have been the one little thing that would have put these men off!

Or not...I honestly don’t know. I can’t read minds...all I know is that I detected a distinct lack of empathy in these men, and it frightened me in a way I haven’t felt frightened in a long time. I do think confidence will help protect me though, so I’ll continue getting better and trying to get healthier.

If that happens again go back inside the store, man or woman yoy were in a potentially dangerous situ. There are other things you could have done to appear less vunerable, male or female, check YouTube.
Also you mentioned western culture , in many many countries in the same scenario you , because you're a woman would have been raped at the veey least or raped and beaten possibly murdered . In these countries , of which there are many there would have been a rudimentary police investigation at best and the population would have said you deserved it. So don't go overboard on the western country battering.

Honestly out of any culture on earth western society is probably the most fair out of any to females. Theres countries where its legal and not even looked down upon to beat your wife with a whip. Women also can not operate machinery legally and get their clitoris cut off. Eastern european culture isnt this bad but still much worse than western culture.

You are completely correct, thank you! I am definitely very fortunate to have been born where I am(socal in the desert).

I know that I am not nearly as unfortunate as women in other countires...my clitoris is still intact and I am capable of experiening pleasure from it.

Before a bunch of randomn ass guys start trolling on me for this, who even gives a fucking shit!??

I'm just a human being, the same as you. I know you want to "get" me, I guess, but did you ever stop to think about what that actually means?

          I'm just a person...I'm not a "troll". I'm not anyone's cute little "pet'"...I'm just me.

Thank you, really. I mean it. I live in the USA...I'm just a basic soCal girl living in a desert. I was born and raised there.

It's very sad that even in the good ol' USA that I STILL feel this way!

You might be right. Perhaps I could have been beaten and murdered...or RAPED.

Who cares anymore? I've been through absolute HELL and back already!

If you're still curious to know why I didn't go back into that liquor store...

It's because there was a man at the counter, a clerk. Cashier. Whatever.

He was Indian. Asian indian lol. We've talked before, please don't call me racist.

I thought he was my friend...But no. I tried to reach out to this person and he STILL tried to hold things over my head!

By "things" I do mean alcohol, by the way.

I fucking love hard liquor. It runs in my blood, I guess. Both of my parents were the same way. They're dead now btw. Their vices fucking DESTROYED them in the end!

I don't care though. I'm doing my own thing...

I may not be an alcoholic now. I realize that it's definitely possible in the future. I. Don't. Give. A. SHIT!.

My parents may have fallen victim to their vices, by why the fuck should I? I'm my OWN PERSON! I don't HAVE to follow in their footsteps if I don't want to!

Again...thank you. I genuinely mean it. I just might look up some of that stuff on Youtube, honestly.

But I will never ever apologize for who I am.

Im by no means a feminist and I actually think it would be good for society if less women worked and focused more on raising their kids at home without daycares.

But if I saw a creep going after a girl like this id definitely step in and tell him to back off or maybe whip his little ass. Dont associate those types with conservatives too much. Most guys I know would not stand for that or allow some dude to scare a girl like that. When I say its ok to "sexualize" women I mean in a respectful way like admiring their beauty. Theres a big line between admiring a woman and harrassing and scaring her. Dont lump us together.

Have we considered that a way to combat the sexualization of women is to do the same to men ? I volunteer for this position btw.

Obviously I don’t have to put up with all the shit women have to deal with, so it takes a bit of brain power for me to be able to see their point. But one thing I have noticed that started pissing me off lately is how freaking /lazy/ character designers are when they make female characters in animation. Especially the monster gals.

When you look at the range of styles of male characters versus the range in females you’ll see the same cookie-cutter cutesy/sexy attractive woman 50x over before you find a unique or “ugly” or scary one. You look at female humanoid monsters they’re just skinny chicks with maybe a cat ear or fangs or dyed blue. Look at any video game franchise, all the chicks are just chicks in outfits, the dudes can be monkeys, robots, cyborgs, werewolves, aliens, whatever.
    Shit’s dumb

        • The stuff you're complaining about caters to the lowest common denominators amongst humans

You've heard sex sells, right? Men usually wanna be warriors in their own way, that's why like fortnite and smite and all those games, the male characters are so different and the female characters are usually an hourglass silhouette painted pretty

There's a lot of psychology at play for these things, but the idea is that most people like sex and most people are straight. You can take these lowest common denominators and make video games where guys can feel like bad ass warriors and girls can feel like sexy and clever little minxes

It's all about what a company can do to get the most revenue. Family Guy is really popular for example, but anyone who's been watching since the beginning know that as popularity went up the writing went down. So they had a platform that worked, but they wanted more. They learned their audience and found a way to expand it. What we're left with is one of the most popular shows that nobody really likes

    • They do. You not notice all the shows appealing to women have eye-candy to the max? Not just eye-candy but these men typically tend to be more than just physically attractive, they're status attractive, financially attractive, power attractive, etc.

If you look at how media sexualized women for men compared to how media sexualized men for women you'll notice that the women being sexualized are far more achievable than the men sexualized for women.

Nothing wrong with men and women being portrayed how the consumers want them to be but this idea how men represent attractive women in media is less realistic than the opposite is pretty funny to me.

      • KholatKhult

        They don’t.
Female characters do not exist unless they are attractive, if they are unattractive they are made as a joke. Male characters are made to fulfill a male power fantasy. Male characters are made for men to want to be, and female characters are made for men to want to be with.

Female consumers are willing to watch, listen, play, and consume media, of unattractive and attractive men, and of unattractive and attractive women.
Male consumers are willing to watch, listen, play, and consume media, of unattractive and attractive men, and only attractive women.

Women are so far sexualized that unattractive women simply do not exist in media, unless they are meant to be laughed at or hated.

But what I will say is I think media is far more to blame. Most men actually don’t mind an unattractive women in media, but creators still won’t put them in, and when they do - it’s seen as “brave” or “feminist” writing.

Marvel, DC comics, Hollywood, Anime, Bethesda Games, Overwatch, etc. all examples of this.

        • Meh, yes and no. I think more often than not men are physically attractive but I would be lying if I said the percentages don't have more physically attractive women in them. That said, hasn't it been studied that even women prefer seeing attractive women in media? I disagree with the last part here to an extent. While yes male characters in video games are to fulfil a male power fantasy that is the point of video games in general, even the female ones. A lot of people forget that women also have power fantasies and more often than not their power comes from their sex appeal.

I disagree that they're not willing to consume media of unattractive women. Look at movies such as Alien. Granted, Ripley isn't an "ugly" woman but she's an in-shape average woman and that movie goes down and an all-time fave for men out there.

Unattractive women certainly do exist is media, just to a lesser degree but this is becoming a trend for both sexes. Just watch some older movies and you'll notice that a lot of the women back then aren't "lookers" like the women in media today, same goes for the dudes.

Again, I'm pretty sure there was a study that showed both men and women preferred things being sold to them if a pretty woman was infront of the product, and it's not even something contained to media but expands to retail too.

Ripely is a fair example, my example would’ve been Jane from Deadwood - she’s filthy, dressed head to toe in western masculine wear, swears like a sailor, aggressive, drunk, and gay, yet everyone I know loved her in the show. Or Brienne from Game of Thrones. Men //will// watch and enjoy unattractive female characters, they’re just never available to be seen. Even if sexuality plays a role in female power, the women I know say they’re tired of it being the /only/ thing portrayed.

And unattractive women are at a very very less degree, I think trying to be mild about it isn’t fair. When you think of the two most popular traits of what people consider to be unattractive in people it would be obesity and age.

You can name many famous fat dudes and many famous old dudes, you’ll have a much, much, harder time doing the same for women. There are some famous men that hardly even look human anymore, Steve Buscemi ? Are you kidding me ? Find me a famous female Steve Buscemi, not likely.

Sexist dudes are making your life shit too bro, as long as they’re pissing their pants online about “women aren’t funny” “women shouldn’t be muscular” “women shouldn’t be aggressive” we’re going to be fucked

We’re missing out on seeing some badass bitches cause dudes want to jackoff in the movie theater ! Get angry !

            • There's a good few of them but for some God damn reason I can't remember them. There's obviously the heroines from slasher flicks and what not too but my mind is being a dumb dumb today.
I disagree with the idea that women are only portrayed as sexy, most of the time these "sexy women" often come with outlandish skills, it's just that being sexy is a common one, like Black Widow, Lara Croft, Samus, etc. I'd say more often than not female power characters are sexy and capable rather than just sexy.

I can definitely see your point when it comes to the "famous fat dudes vs famous fat chicks" point but I think the "famous fat" anybody thing is in a very small minority of actors now to the point that even bringing them up is a bit pointless, although valid. Ones like Steve Buscemi? Damn, ok my memory isn't doing good with names and I don't want to be an ass to these celebs but there's Tilda Swinton. One of my faves from GOT was Gwendoline Christie who although looks great off of the show looked pretty "ugly" by modern standards of television.
I will admit that there are more "ugly" male characters that are more well-known but most are from a bygone era that were acting at a time where not every actor had to be some sort of model, ya'know?

Honestly, sexist dudes aside, I'd take them over the exaggerated female power types. I can atleast brush the sexist dudes to the side and know they won't be taken seriously but if I have to get bludgeoned by another pity-part/pat yourself on the back subject for women then I'mm'a get a aneurysm.

Let's just stop right there where you say Westerners sexualize the female form. Easterners, Africans, all sexualize women. And lets not confuse sexualize with harassment. That is a wholeheartedly different situation.

Since the dawn of homosapian history, women have been sexualized. Literally the first known human sculptures are fertility godesses. Female sexuality is revered and required for the procreation of the species.

Unfortunately that led to forced intercourse; everyone of us has a rapist in our family tree. Women have been assaulted since the very beginning and do still to this day.

It is civilations like the West, and much of the East that don't tollerate assaults on women. In modern times, it is only civilizations in the Middle East, and Africa where female assault isn't discouraged.

I agree the change is happening. With the media industry jumping on the LGBT... band wagon, you are seeing a different female type used.

The typical male and female images in commercials, shows, and even movies now need to fit one of the desired categories or at least be mixed race if it's a m/f relationship.

It's all part of the programming of society. One problem they run into as far as sexualizing the female, is it is human nature, m/f, L, G, B, T, what ever category, we prefer someone at least physical fit and semi attractive.

Physically fit for a female normally means they have a more shapely figure as well, for a male it's more about the shoulders, butt and height.

The change is happening and you are all part of the experiment.

Obesity is a major reason why so many people are sick and why I can't even see my doctor's for months because the wait list is so long. All stems from obesity and now america is glorifying it. Obesity is a serious problem and the fact that the media is now also glorifying it is making everyone more sick.

There's a difference between being sexualized and being sexually harassed or assaulted.

There's nothing inherently wrong with female sexuality nor admiration of a female body. The first humanoid figurines in history were consistently large breasted, large bellied, large bottomed women. The issue comes from how we are treated by males, who feel they have a right to our bodies without our consent.

The male body is also sexualized but not to the same extent, but sexual admiration of the male body is a phenomenon.

Humans are animals, biologically men are attracted to sexy women and do have fantasy about women's bodies, but again humans are rational and have boundaries and they can think what they want but have no right to act on it (which deservingly is a criminal offense). A man may find women attractive, and fantasize her in his mind thats biology, but they have no right to do anything just based on that, sexual harassment should be most seriously punished and a woman's no should always be taken as a no and respected.

Some of them you can tell were hoisted by their own petard, they're dressed to impress and they end up drooling over this dude. What's really funny is when they stare at his chest and he notices and stares at theirs and they freak out. They're just like "no, men like him are supposed to stare me at me, not the other way around!" It's probably fake but still funny

That's quite a leap from sexualizing women's bodies to sexual harassment. How exactly are we supposed to want to have sex with someone we don't sexualize?

I have to agree with ItDuz on this one.
    "Ugh".

Straight men find women attractive/sexy, I don’t find that particularly offensive or troublesome. If you’re worried about sexual harassment just move away from the big multicultural melting pot cities

This is false. If you have 10 retards and one genius, all 10 retards will have below average IQ.

Wouldnt the average be somewhere closer to theirs and not the genius? Like if 9 dudes had a certain IQ and one dudes different its gonna be like the 9 dudes more isnt it?

Nine retards' IQs plus one genius' IQ divided by ten = nine below average retards

            (9*50+1*150)/10 = 60

60 is the average, they all have 50

  • They are asking for it, otherwise they would cover their whole body and not wear those skimpy and revealing clothing.

Sexualizing versus sexually harassing if different. Everyone, yes everyone, who is attractive will have someone sexualizing their body. It's normal.

Once it gets to sexual harrassment (verbal or physical) it's no longer normal and should be addressed.

Well first I do like sexy women bodys second if you don't want to be sexualise then quit making ass shaken videos or walking around sports and car shows wearing hot sexy clothes and stop hot sexy models showing off hot sexy bikini and other hot clothes and when you wake up in morning check the mirror cause if you ware that tight blouse or skirt with high heels you will be sexualise its natural for both sides!!! Its to much variations to stop sexualise just saying
