Is it normal to see things that aren't really there?

I was standing in my kitchen with my mom, she was standing by the sink washing dishes and when she took a step back I looked over and saw a little kid holding a plate stretch up to set it on the counter. There are no kids in our house so I jumped backwards in shock and when I looked again the kid was gone. This wasn't one of those situations like when you see an object in the dark and think it's a person, I very clearly saw the kid and then the empty space where he had been standing. This is the only time this has happened to me and it scared the absolute shit out of me. Is this normal?

I always hate when that happens.
Damn those little demonic plate stackers.
It's best not to confront them. They can get down-right ornery.

  • Hallucinations are surprisingly common. Some people experience them once, some everyday, some never, etc. They can be really vivid, like yours, or a fleeting shadow or a voice. Hallucinations can be caused by many things like stress, mental ill health, bereavement, hunger or thirst, tiredness, etc.

Some people have beliefs behind their hallucinations / visions and won't actually believe that it's a trick of the mind. Some think it's a spiritual occurrence, etc.

It really depends on how you view it. If you believe in ghosts or God, you may believe it's something like that, but if you don't, you may want to just be aware that if it begins to happen more frequently, it could be a sign of a mental illness and you should see your doctor.

It's not normal to experience hallucinations unless you are dealing with a mental or neurological condition, you may be extremely sleep, food or sensory deprived.

I once had a hallucination while working the graveyard shift stocking at Target. It only happened the one time, and I wasn't scared because I enjoyed it. It was also quite fleeting.

Did he at least eat his entire meal first? Or did he leave the vegetables?

But as far as seeing things that are not there - Not real common but normal'ish. Well like at work, our managers see the possibility of us doing way more than practical. Of course we cannot tell them that they are hallucinating...

I guess if it's a once off it's normal. If it happens again though, see a doctor.
