Is it normal to record without consent

Okay so I know TECHNICALLY its not legal to record people but I record my family without their knowledge. I think the things I record are innocuous. For example my grandma sings happy birthday to me or my grandpa sings my favorite old school Christian hymns. I’m building a library of audio recordings (mainly of my grandparents) because I’m scared of losing them and I know when they’re gone it will be a source of comfort. Is this normal?

This is kinda not normal but cute 4

I don't think you are going to get sued by your grandma.

It may be legal. Depending on your state. Some states have one party consent, two party consent or all party consent. But in all public spaces it's all right to record everything in any state

I have filmed my dad and son so often in secret and I feel no guilt about it. Now that my dad is no longer here I can still watch those videos. He loved my son so much.

In USA in public you can film anyone. In private you can film but in some states not secretly unless both parties consent.

It depends on the State, and the Country.

In Wisconsin it only takes one party to consent to the recording for it to be legal in a number of situations (not all).

When I was driving Lyft/Uber a few people really got upset that I had a dashcam running at all times and did not tell them (or have signs telling them). In Wisconsin I didn't have to tell them or have signs that they could see.

Now other States require notification and consent, and some just require signs to notify people.

You need to research your local laws.

In many states its legal to record at least sound (without notification and consent) in your private residence.
