Is it normal to put hot/warm food in the fridge?

Say you've got leftovers that are still warm, do you ever put them straight in the fridge?
Or do you always let them cool down to room temperature beforehand?

If I have other things to do, I would much rather put warm food in the fridge than leave it out on the counter for hours while I get distracted with other stuff.
But I live with people for whom this concept doesn't compute. "Hot food in the fridge? It can't be done!!" They exclaim.
And they get all antsy when I do it. Shits me.

So, what do you do? Would you have a problem if someone else did it?

Yes, it's totally fine to put hot food in the fridge. 10

It sounds to me likely that the people you live with are following a rule without understanding the reasons behind it.

The standard advice is to leave food to cool to room temperature before putting it in the fridge. This is because putting hot food in the fridge requires the appliance to use additional electricity to cool it, and because it raises the temperature inside the fridge, which means other food already there warms up a little.

If you want to reduce the rate of bacterial growth in food, you should chill it as rapidly as possible. Obviously, in terms of additional electrical consumption and fridge-heating, there's a big difference between putting a huge pot of boiling hot soup in the fridge and a plate of warm leftovers. Leaving food to sit out for hours is unnecessary and potentially dangerous. Not only do most things cool down to room temperature far more quickly than that, but you'll be providing bacteria with an ideal temperature to multiply.

Bottom line: think twice about putting large quantities of _hot_ food directly in the fridge, but there's nothing wrong with putting a couple of portions of _warm_ food in the fridge and letting the thing do the job it was designed to do.

You can put hot food in the refrigerator, but it can’t be hot food in a large container, like a large pot of soup. That’s because the entire pot of soup may not get to a safe cold temperature before bacteria start to develop. Divide up large portions of hot food into smaller ones and your good to go from hot to cold.
All food should be refrigerated within 2hrs of cooking.

I just put it in the fridge while it's still hot and I have no issues with others doing it. My only concern is hoping the food doesn't go to waste. I hate that.

I put hot food into the fridge all the time. A good container will sometimes even pull a vacuum and make a better seal.

I let food cool down before I put it in the fridge. Less strain on the fridge, leading to a longer service life and less electricity used.
Not to mention if you put something hot on a glass fridge shelf, it may break from the massive temperature difference.

I always let stuff cool down some before refridging it. I been doing it for decades and I'm still alive.
