Is it normal to prepare for mental illness before being diagnosed?

My mother, and her grandmother both developed schizophrenia in their early thirties, I'm 23 now and I feel like I'm starting to go a little crazy. My girlfriend told me I've been acting off lately and that I've been really chaotic and messy, and I agree, I've been unorganized and can't seem to get my brain in the right place. I don't think it's bad enough to go to the doctors just yet, but since it runs in the family I'm really nervous, and I don't really want to know if I have it or not. I don't know what to do, chances are I'm a whackjob before I turn 30. Should I start preparing? And how? I wanted to propose, but it was hell growing up with my mom, she was never stable enough to stay home more than a few days, I'd never burden my girlfriend with dealing with me if I absolutely lose it.

That sounds like a very hard situation and I'm sorry you're struggling with it. You say you don't want to go to the doctor because it doesn't seem that bad yet, but actually, that's a really good time to go to the doctor! The earlier someone gets treated, the better their prognosis is -- and even if you don't have schizophrenia, going to the doctor can be a good way to put your mind at ease. The symptoms you describe sound more like anxiety or dissociation, though it's always best to be on the safe side and get a medical opinion as soon as possible.

Mental illness is a hard thing to go through, but even schizophrenia doesn't mean someone's life is over. I've met a lot of kind, smart, and productive people with schizophrenia, and especially now that there are better medications and earlier treatment, people with schizophrenia live much better lives than they used to. Even if you do one day develop it, it doesn't mean you would turn into your mother.

Hey, keep calm don't rush things. I know how you feel, I felt like that a while ago when my diagnosis wasn't very clear. I'm okay now, but believe me that worrying won't help. Do things you like meanwhile, being paranoic will probably lead you to a mental illness sooner than doing your daily activities as if nothing's wrong.
