Is it normal to not know what work i should do

so my dad is quite successful and making a decent amount of money to pay for 3 people's worth of university tuition.

I just finished my entrance test for university and waiting for the results, but I don't know what I should do if I fail.

My dad is amazing and wants his kids to get jobs that are skill related (I mean jobs that are not office work, lawyers, Artists etc. for example).

He always told me how he doesn't want me to work a 9 to 5 jobs because he knows that it would be stressful and would not pay that well.

If I didn't get accepted to university I'm planning to work, maybe mcdonalds or doordash etc. since I only have a highschool degree I want to try applying for jobs in companies, who knows maybe I can get a job somewhere.

My dad would of course, probably be against this decision, I know that if I fail to get into university he's probably gonna put me in a private university( Expensive as hell, I don't want that).

My dad is already 60 years old, I want to start pulling my weights immediately and help out. but on the grand scheme of things, a salary from mcdonalds, or maybe a small job ain't gonna help much.

I want my dad to retire but without me getting a job that pays enough for mortgages and such, this will just be a dream.

please enlighten me, I'm very naïve and new to the adult world.

You have to identify what you're good at, first. Forget about money for a second and just figure out what you think you can do. I side with your dad in avoiding 9 to 5s and McDonalds, but more important is you being happy about what you're doing. Most generic desk jobs *suck*. Once the novelty of having money and a job wears off, you don't want to find yourself hating the world.

When you're looking at what you're good at, think low-level. By that I mean look at basic motor skills, and then move up the ladder from there. Don't discard anything, either. Get input from friends and family as well. By the end, you should be able to put together an idea from the list you have.

All that's assuming you don't already have a dream of somewhere you'd like to work or something you'd like to work on. If you do, then the answer is a lot simpler. Do that.

    • I do indeed want to do art for a living, but I know that my skills are not enough and will never be enough in the short term.

I'll do some research on what I can do, Thanks a lot for the advice.

It depends on what you're good at and your interests.

As someone who works in the restaurant world, I’d start at a real restaurant. Even if it’s a busboy or hostess. Just Bc you learn more professional standards and customer service which will carry you further than flipping fake patties.

Customer service alone is great on a resume. And business owners know that high volume restaurant workers are wonderful under pressure.

    How old are you?

You could also look into adult classes for skilled labor. To be fair it’s a much better option than college since most young people are going to school, there’s less electricians, carpenters, plumbers etc. you work under someone until you get good, then you own your own company. There will be no competition at this point.

It doesn’t sound like you’re American. But here there adult classes or trade schools. Try looking it up online or in newspapers. And word of mouth. Start telling people you’d like to get into a trade. Most old men are happy to hire someone with no experience Bc that means they have no bad habits on the job site.

Um no we havent. Majority of the ocean has not even been explored because scientists dont have the correct tools to go that deep. And people have said they seen mermaids. Youre dumb.

And mermaids do exist because i am one.

Dogs are actually pretty smart. You obviously don't know what you are talking about. cuit has done this when there wasn't any food around.

Nope not projecting. You just cant accept the fact that my dog identifies as a biscuit because youre bigoted and close-minded.

Theres this older black dude at my work whos a truck driver. He actually makes good money driving. And he's obsessed with stock markets. He trades and its all he talks about. I try to dodge him at work because he cant stop talkin about it. You can tell he's not the brightest but he's so obsessed with markets hes used it to make alot of money.

Anyway he showed me his little trading app thing and I glanced at his money on it and he had over 2 million dollars just on that app alone. If he has 2 milliom just on there im assuming he has more somewhere else. That there showed me anyone can make alot of money from stocks. Only thing he has going for him is he has a passion for stocks and crypto. You dont have to be a genius you just have to be really into it.

Reason why Im saying it is if you find the stock market interesting you wont need to work a 9 to 5 forever. You can just get a decent paying trade and use that income to trade stocks and buy real estate. You can retire young. Its actually pretty easy to do but hard to pull the trigger.
