Is it normal these days to share extreme personal opinions at work?

Specifically... when interacting with people who have extreme views (social issues, current events). I'm a neutral person. I don't know how to respond when people express extreme opinions while at work. I don't think it's appropriate but I'm also not in a position to say anything. It just makes me uncomfortable and I feel like I'm viewed as a bad person for not responding.

  • I’ve worked with a lot of people at jobs who were either ultra religious conservatives or insane liberals. I learned telling them to shut up and get back to work made me popular with literally every other coworker in the area.

    • Yeah that's the thing. I don't care what people's beliefs are while at work. I'm just there to work. So probably changing to subject quickly could be best

  • I just tend to laugh uncomfortably and go back to what I was doing.

  • No it's not normal. Nobody gives a fuck about your political opinions. Nobody likes being around people who talk about politics 24/7.

  • Answer them with a foreign language or in something like Klingon. Pretend like you don't understand them, and then just walk away laughing.

  • What you need is miley Cyrus’ entire back catalogue played really loud through the work speakers
Don’t ask me why but it always works

  • Older people are more outspoken on controversial issues than younger people. They come from a generation where it wasn't as divided and having an opinion wasn't gonna get you cancelled. I think also some areas its more acceptable to talk openly about controversial issues.
