Is it normal that my mom is so overly religous

Is it normal to have overly religious parents? My parents are conservative Buddhists (mostly my mom) and she reads sutras, it’s kind of like the Bible for Christians, everyday. I can hardly talk to her because she’s reading it everyday. I seriously have to wait at least 5 minutes for her to finish each time. I’ve become distant and it’s come to the point where she told me not to say “I’m lonely” because it was disrespectful to the spirits surrounding us. I know this seems so crazy, but it’s my reality. And a part of me asks if it really is real.

My mother is very religious and I can't stand her.

  • I find this satirical, thank you!

Maybe you should wait for the right moment, clap your hands together, say "Namaste", and give her deep eye contact

Namaste means my inner spirit greets your inner spirit. She should know that, and if she's humble, which Buddha advises, she should become open to hearing you out

She's still a parent and is choosing her edification over your development, I don't know the whole story but that's a red flag to me

I'm Buddhist and have been through the temple, not even my fellow monks were that overly contrite. It smacks of some deep seated shame for a past sin.

There's no such thing as "overly religious." There is merely religious and not religious.

It just depends upon the religion and sect of said religion that the peraon is following. A strictly religious person is not "overly religious," they are merely folllowing their religious beliefs.

When I’m talking about “overly religious” I mean someone who is intolerant of ANYONE who disagrees of with their religious views, will praise said religion in practically every sentence they speak, will praise every good thing to be a blessing from said religion and every bad thing to occur to be punishment from religion using it as evidence that the religion is legitimate, defensive and argumentative when someone does not agree with their ideals. but that’s just my opinion.

That's not being "overly religious." It's simply following one's religion. If one is intolerant of people with other religious views, one's religious views probably tells one to be so. If one mentions religion in every sentence one speaks, one's religious views probably tell one to mention religion as often as possible. If one believes that everything "good" is a blessing, and everything "bad" is a punishment, then one's religious beliefs probably say it to be so. It's not being "overly religious;" rather, it is simply following one's own religion.

It’s not necessary to do all those things in the religion she practices though.
