The cliché about it being a southern thing has been deployed, but there are southern states where it's not legal (Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, for example) and northern states where it is legal (Massachusetts, Vermont and New York, for example).

FWIW, it's also legal in the UK. I recall reading how this causes problems in some communities where immigrants haven't integrated to the British mainstream for religious or cultural reasons and so tend to almost always marry within the community. It's not like first cousin marriages always result in genetic issues, but the incidence of some inherited illnesses and disabilities is much higher than the UK norm in those communities.
