Is it normal that i think everything is ugly nowadays

Basically everything is ugly nowadays. Everything from architecture to fashion, cars, etc. Look at a photo from 100 years ago and you'll notice that people had more style back then, buildings were more beautiful, Cars looked better, etc. So what happened? Why does everything have to be so ugly nowadays? Why can't we build these beautiful buildings anymore? Why can't we dress nicely anymore?

I've known countless people that exist believing they were "born in the wrong generation" due to aesthetic taste. It's a matter of taste. I personally disagree with it. As a black bisexual woman studying medicine, I believe the realization that I wouldn't be allowed to freely exist in the early 1900's makes it uglier than the present could ever be.

I think the gist of what she's saying is that she would have lived a greatly oppressed life one hundred years ago. What she's talking about isn't so hard to understand. Also I don't think she's asking for a pat on the back, but simply pointing out the truth which is is that she, and the majority of women would be living a greatly oppressed life one hundred years ago.

Thanks! You possibly put that in better words than I would have.

One hundred years ago, women were expected to get married, and have kids. I've been divorced twice, and never had an especially strong desire to have kids. I have yet to meet a man that I deem worthy of all the pain, and pain in the ass I would have to endure if I were to conform to traditional gender roles. I'm a straight, CIS woman and I completely support, sympathize and empathize with your position! I love good fashion, art and architecture, but it's not a good enough reason to want to live my life one hundred years ago.

    • You could still appreciate the building styles of the era.

The aesthetics of a bygone era are not reason enough to want to live in said era. Yes, the architecture is very nice, and so is much of the fashion, but ain't no way in Hell that I would want to wear a corset on a daily basis or trade in my Doc Marten's for high heels.

One hundred years ago, women didn't even have the right to vote yet so why would I want to live in an era where I'm a second class citizen?

It isn't about you, it's what they're thinking. They could have reason enough, since having an aesthetic is different from appreciating past cultural preference and way of life. Plus, nowadays people face threats of personal security being lost, being kidnapped, and even killed because of bombs more than back then. Maybe they don't want any of that happening, and would rather be oppressed than killed.

This is completely normal imo. Everything is changing to look a weird plastic type "clean". I personally just think it's eh but I can see why someone would hate this type of thing. Everything is blocky and simple now, while it used to be fancy and elegant.

Today's architecture is a joke compared to the stuff they had 100 years ago. If they could build like that 100 years ago, I don't see why we couldn't now with the state-of-the-art technology we have.

I agree. I am in no way religious but I really like old churches and stuff. They are such beautiful buildings compared to the concrete blocks we have today.

I partly agree. I like modern looks as well but often they are just lazily built.

Simplicity also has its beauty, you just got to look from the right point of view.

There's a reason that "retro" stuff becomes popular. Times change, and styles change with them. No one's making you conform.

Incidentally, I find being "stylish" is often too expensive and high maintenance to be practical, which is why I tend to dress simply, for instance.

    No, not normal.

Modern architecture (imo and most people I know) is some of the best architecture ever created.

Well, our modern architecture here in Sweden sucks. Architects here still think it's the 1970s for some reason and keep designing these brutalist-looking towerblocks.

A majority of the people prefer older architecture. Architects should listen more to the general population instead of spreading their shit, modernist taste that nobody likes.

Some people do, it's just not as practical anymore.

I don't see how decorating the facade of a building would make it any less functional?

It doesn't, it's just a waste of resources
