Is it normal that i diet like this

On 6 days of the week I eat completely clean and severely restrict my calorie intake, I will usually just have a bowl of cereal in the morning and a very light meal later in the day. Then on a Saturday I will eat as much as humanly possible, usually to the point of throwing up and I will drink lots of alcohol.

This diet works for me because it helps me to be motivated to carry on if I have something like that to look forward to. I’m slightly underweight but it’s nothing serious and I’m mostly happy with my body and I work out loads so this is definitely a good diet for me. I know it might not be the healthiest but is this an okay diet?

  • That’s just literally what Bulimia is

    • I’m not bulimic. I don’t deliberately make myself sick, I just eat that much that it makes me throw up.

Making yourself throw up after eating is still bulimia.

Eating so much that you throw up is not good for you.

I wouldn't think so. It sounds quite bad for. You're already underweight, work out a lot, and barely eat anything. Then you gorge yourself on Saturdays. There is no way that's good for you.

This can't be good for you.

Try vary it a little more I'd recommend but it's your life. If it were me, I'd have Sunday be the day of eating/drinking more, but not to the point of vomiting. If it works for you though, and you're healthy/feeling good/feeling motivated, who's it hurting?

This is bulimia wether you intentionally throw up or not, just like refusing to eat or eating as little as possible while still surviving is anorexia wether you acknowledge that or not.

Throwing up is your body's way of telling you NOT to do that!

You clearly have an interest in food that's at least very close to an obsession. Your starvation diet during the week, your weekend binge-eating (which you view as a reward to yourself) and how you say that you work-out loads means I suspect you're talking crap when you when you say you're "slightly underweight". I'd be willing to bet a small sum that you're more malnourished than that. You've probably massaged the numbers for your height and weight and carefully chosen a table that allows you to believe that you're only just a little below the normal range, when in fact you're seriously underweight.

I have no idea what label an eating disorder specialist would apply to you, but your attitude towards food is definitely not healthy, and that usually indicates underlying psychological issues.

Leaving aside the huge question about why you feel compelled to abuse your body in this way, what you're doing is not healthy physically. You're stressing it with starvation-level nourishment combined with strenuous exertion for six days a week, and then stressing it in the opposite way by gorging on Saturday. If you're young and relatively healthy, you can get away with this abuse for a while, but humans did not evolve to cope with this sort of eating pattern. Sooner or later, something is probably going to break in a spectacular way that puts you in a hospital bed. If that doesn't happen, you may well find that you suffer chronic health issues as you get older due to the damage you're doing to your body now.

You're correct that that weight at your height results in a BMI of 18.3; underweight, but not excessively so.

However, if you're working out so much that you have significantly more muscle mass than the average person, BMI is even less useful than it is for most people. Since muscle weighs significantly more than fat, professional athletes in peak physical condition with minimal body fat can have a BMI in the overweight range. Therefore, if you have a substantial amount of muscle, your very low BMI could indicate that you have an unhealthily low amount of body fat.

Since you're only five foot tall, I assume you're a woman. One indication of undernourishment and excessive physical stress in women is the absence of periods. If you don't have regular periods, you really should take a serious look at your dietary and exercise habits.

In any case, regardless of what your BMI is and what clinical measurements would show your body fat to be, the fact remains that you have a very unhealthy attitude towards food. Sooner or later, you're going to pay the price for this.

        • I do have regular periods and I’m in good health. I have tried diets where I eat more but eat healthy everyday and I’ve found that I really can’t stick to it and completely avoiding unhealthy food makes me miserable. That’s why I have a cheat day and then compensate by eating less throughout the week.

You should try the ketogenic diet. You get to eat bacon and eggs and shit all day and it actually works. You eat high fat foods but next to 0 carb foods. So very little fruits but lots of olive oil and butter. Its amazing how quick the weight falls off.

Yeah, people say you have to "balance your carbs, proteins, and fats," when you really don't. They're all just getting burned up for energy. Really, you can eat whatever types of food you want, as long as you don't eat too much. You just have to remember: 1g_fat=8cals, 1g_protein=4cals, and 1g_carbs=4cals. Also, remember this. Drinking cold water gives you a few negative calories.

Thats works too but what I loved about keto is I could eat as much as I wanted. I ate all the time and it was steaks, veggies dipped in olive oil and butter on everything. That diet is so cool because we've been taught that high fat foods make you fat and gives you heart disease but it actually doesnt according to new studies. It's harder for me to watch the calories because I'm always hungry. Whatever works for you is the way to go.
