Is it normal my dad sends annoying texts

My dad basically texts like he's emailing. He sends paragraphs then tells me he's interested in hearing "at least 3 or 4 responses" from me. Or he'll give quiz questions or want to debate and stuff over text. I find it extremely annoying because it's like playing the brain olympics just to check up on him. Does anyone else's parents or friends send ridiculously long or overly formal texts? I don't even know if I should tell him or just let him do it.

His mom sends him the most annoying texts. My son is guilty. Crossword puzzles, questions that can wait.

Us "older folks" learned how to communicate by writing out thoughts out - and trying to explain. Not by expressing partial thoughts.

Why not spend some time reading his thoughts and explanations - and just doing 1 thoughtful reply a day, where you really try to explain how you feel and what you think.

Of course, it is appropriate at times to tell your parents and other people that you are growing up and that you consider the subject (or item) as personal and on a need to know basis; and to please respect your privacy and right to make your own decisions. Actually, most parents and others will get the message and may even apologize for the unwarranted intrusion.

I wish you well with this,

Yes, of course, everything that could ever possibly need to be said can be communicated in the fifty or so words that will fit on a single smartphone screen. And how damned inconsiderate of your father to bother you when you have better things to do - like watching porn or playing Animal Crossing or checking out what your thirty favourite influencers are covertly advertising today. And how incredibly stupid of the old man to try to stick to the conventions of English text layout that have developed - for very good reasons - over the last millennia or so.

Here's a thought to cheer you up: he's going to be dead someday, and then he won't bother you any more.

    • yes, you're right! how better he bother me when i have better things to do such as HOMEWORK and going to WORK. i don't think you understand the severity of my dilemma which would perfectly explain your rude and sarcastic comment. when i say he types out paragraphs, i mean paragraphs. im talking having 30 messages with texts boxes flooding onto my phone, making it freeze and such. sometimes i respond and he completely disregards what i say which shows his intent is a lecture rather than a dialogue or conversation.

and as for the "he'll be dead soon", thanks a lot sicko i really needed that reminder

Boojum. I believe you made a typo. Didn't you mean to say "in 50 letters or so"?

You and I both know the value of good explanations - or at least the attempt at them.

      Peace,
