Is it normal i think i may like john lennon’s solo music more than the beatles?

Ok, let me get this out of the way first because I know that if I don’t say it somebody DEFINITELY will: yes, John Lennon was flawed. He committed domestic abuse and pretty much ignored his first wife and son and instead put all his love for his second of both, and those are all bad things to do. I personally feel like he really wanted to do good but didn’t quite know how to sometimes, and maybe if he lived longer he could have improved. Maybe.

Now, with all that out of the way, let’s talk about his music. He’s mostly known for being a member of The Beatles, arguably the most famous band of all time. I’m a big fan of them, and of the solo careers of them all, but John especially. I really feel like his solo work stands out more than the others. It could be due to the fact that I’ve not seen him play Beatles songs in a solo concert as much as the others, but I have an easier time separating his solo music from The Beatles as a band.

Imagine is a song I’m particular about. It may seem sacrilegious or naively optimistic, but it puts me in a good mood and makes me want to be a better person. And most of his best quotes and lyrics came from his solo music.

“Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans” Beautiful Boy

“They hate you if you’re clever, and they despise a fool” Working Class Hero

“Who on earth do you think you are, a superstar? Well right you are!” Instant Karma

“ Love is the flower, you've got to let grow” Mind Games

To name a few. He has a lot of other great quotes but I was just using ones from his solo songs. The only song of his from The Beatles that has quotes just as good that I can think of is All You Need is Love (even he said that the title of that song was the best lyric he ever wrote!)

The early half of The Beatles was nearly all love songs, which is fine and all but it wasn’t until later when they got really good. But John’s solo career was great from the start (ok, his experimental stuff with Yoko wasn’t great but I’m talking about solo stuff). Like, so great that it really makes you think and can even improve your life if you really take it to heart, at least some of it.

But at the end of the day it’s all personal preference. Let me know what you think.

I like John Lennon's music, but I think he's overrated as a human being.
