If a server is rude, I feel no reason to reward them for their service. That only encourages more poor service.
I’ve never understood this logic. If somebody is in a bad mood or having a bad day, how is giving them a poor tip going to help that? Not tipping them is just going to make them feel even worse, and treat the next customer even worse. That’s what encourages more poor service, whereas a good tip might just be the thing they need to lift their spirits and treat the next person better.
Servers aren’t dogs you’re trying to train or babies you’re trying to teach. They’re fully functioning human beings, teenagers and adults.
I get what you're saying, but that honestly sounds tiring (being the selfish person I am). It's really saint-like and admirable if that's what you're doing.
But couldn't it go the other way? If somebody is in a mad mood or having a bad day, how is treating them horribly going to help that?
i served for 3 years and i feel like a tip like that is deserved if the server is rude.
I had a server who was lovely til she realised I was only getting coffee and not a full meal. It was an extremely fancy coffee shop in ATL airport. She literally slammed my coffee down (and got my order wrong to boot...)
I still tipped her 18%. I had been planning on rounding up to $10, which would have been at least 50% cos I know there would have been higher paying customers, and I was taking their place, even though there were plenty of empty tables (and she was really lovely til I just ordered coffee and her face fell right infront of me). I needed no other assistance other than the coffee, I left the table neat, and I wasn't there too long.
My boyfriend will sometimes tip 15% for a bad server. But they have to be more than moody. They have to be rude and incompetent (and not just the kitchen being slow, that's out of their control).
They're still people and the American tipping system is fucked. Just pay people decent fucking wages. It's obscene the way some people choose to wield their pathetic little attempt at holding power over another human. Wow. How exciting your life must be. You get to reward or punish people at your whim. Whoopy fuckin doo. Not to mention, they're not seeing your shitty tip and thinking, "Whoa, I must need to step up my game!" They're thinking you're an arsehole. So "lesson" not learned.
I never tip at restaurants in Australia, and while I'm sure it wouldn't be frowned upon to do so, it's not required, because their employers pay them a decent fucking wage in the first place.
I agree it’s almost like a set up for rude employees. They’ll only be happy to get the extra money and if not enough they treat you bad, which isn’t right. If America was smart enough to at least minimum wage them that’d be much better.
The American tipping system is broken and stupid.
In fact, I dislike the entire restaurant system: the long waiting time, the waiting to pay, not being able to do anything about cold food, ect.
Home-cooking, grocery store food, or takeout are what I get, unless someone pressures me into dining out.
That’s true too I try and avoid it when I can. I’m more happier with the way I make the same food that way I know I’ll enjoy it. Much faster too, don’t have to sit at a dirty table, saving money, theirs a lot more benefits to home cooking than going to a restaurant. Although I would probably eat in more if I knew I didn’t have to tip. Which ik it’s a choice but I’m not one to just ignore it. I wish it wasn’t a option and that they got paid enough to begin with.
Exactly. I don't automatically get bad service from servers in Aus, because they don't have a tip to earn in order to be able to pay their bills. Rather, they have more financial security, so they are less stressed and more likely to be able to put any non work shit to the side and focus on their work while at work.
Treating people like humans as a baseline is usually not a bad policy.
Yes, yes, yes. Amen.
Their take home pay shouldn't be held at the whim of customers, they should be paid properly by the employer and then if they are a great server they may also get an extra income in tips. That's how it works in every country I've lived in.
Yes. Especially considering how far below minimum wage some servers are paid.
I've never worked in the service industry, but I have friends who do, in the US. I don't know how they do it.
The US has this bizarre fixation on people having to earn shit. Like servers and tips. Or sick people and healthcare. Or minorities and human rights.
To be fair, it's not just the US that has a problem with that last one. They're just the loudest about it.
I think there is some merit to the earn it all mentality, and I think other countries could learn something from it. That's what got them to the moon and that's what the American dream is. But I agree, it doesn't need to extend to human rights and basic health care. And if anything it goes against this ideology to not pay people fairly. Makes no sense to me.
Tipping worldwide varies a lot, now I know what it's like in Aus. Over here a 10% tip is part of the bill - and although you don't have to actually tip, almost everyone pays for the service - it's default. The US does have very weird tipping practices, I never got used to it.
I'm Australian and I've never seen a 10% tip as part of a bill. Payment for service is part of the proprietor's overheads and is presumably included in the price of the meal. I don't know anyone who tips as a matter of course, although sometimes if my change is a small amount I'll put it into a tips jar at the register.
I'm not sure it was clear, I meant I had just learned from what she said how it's done in Australia and explained how that works over here = Brazil.
Yeah. A lot of the things taken as normal in the US are weird or even offensive to the rest of the world.
Giving a dollar as a tip just to make some kind of statement is childish. Tip properly or nothing at all. $1 is more insulting that leaving nothing.
I cannot fathom why anyone would take a job as a wait person to begin with. The restaurant owner is getting mostly free labor. What is it? $2.50 an hour they have to pay and the tips are suppose to make up for the rest? It is like they don't want wait staff making too much money.
The situation just puts everyone in a bad spot (except the guy running the place). Wait staff is hoping people tip, customers feel pressured to tip, etc. It is the main reason I do not eat at places where tipping is expected.
I feel no qualms about tipping. If they were good it's usually as generous as i can give if not I dont tip. It's there own doimg for being a waiter/waitress they knew what they were walking into
Everyone's susceptible to mood Changes. Maybe they were having a bad day.
True. But I have an expectation of friendly service when I go out to eat.
I think that the employers should pay the wait staff proper wages. That's being incredibly stingy and cheap. It shouldn't be the customer's responsibility to pay them. But I still leave a tip, cause I don't want to be rude.
