Is it normal i’ve been feeling very nostalgic lately?

Maybe it’s because we’re going into a new decade soon, and I’ll also be going back to college, but lately I’ve been thinking a lot about my life as a kid. I miss being a kid sometimes, but even when I was a kid I missed being an even younger kid. I’ve just been thinking a lot about 5th grade especially, which was ten years ago for me. It was a decent year but it could’ve been better. I feel like I spent too much time trying to be an adult and didn’t take time to be a kid. I wish I would’ve gotten out more and made more friends, instead of spending so much time alone and in my house.

This is only the second decade I can remember and I already miss the old one. I even remember crying one day when I was 10 in 2009 because of how much I missed the early 2000s. It’s like some weird paradox of being nostalgic for a time when I was nostalgic. I wish I could go back to back then, with everything I know now, and do the past ten years over again. But I know I can’t do that.

“Yesterday’s history. Tomorrow’s a mystery. Today is a gift, that’s why it’s called the present.”

I think what you're feeling is fairly normal. I'm old enough to be your mother, and believe me I'm right there with you. I can get very nostalgic about the music, fashion, and culture of the 1980's and 1990's, but the problem is that if I get too much into the nostalgia stuff I can get melancholy.

I remember once hearing this old guy say, "if you've got one foot in yesterday, and one foot in tomorrow you're shitting all over today. It's kind of a crass, and crunchy thing to say, but I think it's true. Try not to waste to much of today obsessing over the past, and future. Of course all of these things I'm telling you are so much easier said than done.

some people are just very nostalgic. i used to be one. however memories fade, and nostalgia is usually something plastered ontop of those memories, most the time, becaz of music.

Life seems to get harder the older we get. Even at 20, the adult world is setting in pretty hard.

One thing you might do if this is your thing is form a small collection (try not to hoard) of things that defined whatever year range you are most nostalgic about. Magazines, movies, CDs, or whatever. I recommend thrift stores for such finds. Might be a bit of rummaging but worth a shot every so often.

In case you wonder, even as we get older we still tend to long for a certain time in life. I am over 40 and still my favorite years of my own life were age 7 to 14.

Is nostalgia normal? Based on the fact that there are radio and TV stations that play yesteryear's programming, even youtube videos with old commercials, a few cafes dedicated to the past and whatever - Yes, normal.

  • Dude, I am extremely nostalgic. Have been all my life, now at 67 I see why, not that my life is not good. It is very good and I am very lucky to have everything. I think about my hippy days and the best music ever made. The buddies I had during high school and my girlfriends. I really miss my brothers and sisters when we were all together. Sometimes I wish I can go back but we can't.
At 20 you have a long way to go, enjoy yourself, make the best of your life because it could be gone in a heart beat. normal
