Is it normal for people to keep tv's on all damn day (and night)? wtf?

Is it normal for some people to leave their damn TV on all day and night?

I can't stand this.

If I have to spend time at my parents house, they keep their shitty tv's (yes, multiple tv's) on at high volume all day and night. That's just toxic shit! They don't watch movies. They just have that nauseating commercial blaring garbage running on and on.

That's not normal.
Anyone with any decency and self-compassion would not put up with it. I mean, I watch a movie. I turn the tv off after that (well, technically, I never watch tv, I stream video online).

Who on earth is dumb enough to subject their ears to that shit! It's blabbbbeerrrrr of obnoxious noise.

Seems like only old people do this? I don't know. I don't really want to know.

1. Am I normal for hating tv's so damn much (that noise!!!)?
2. Is it normal to leave a tv on all the time like that (I say, no, it isn't)?

I lived with an Italian girl for awhile who would have the tv on all day and night. I noticed that half the time she wasn't even watching it, she was just doing odd chores around the house. I asked her one day why she always had the tv on even when she wasn't watching it and she said "its for the background, it keeps me company throughout the day"
I don't know if that answers your question but that was the reason for her and it used to drive me crazy as well.

    • Holzman_67, yes, that's usually what people do, I think. They keep it on for background noise. I loathe!!!! I mean, try music???? Anything is better than blabber and commercials from a tv. It makes awful background ambiance.

I was battled to answer yes or no in the sense that no is not normal, but yes so Many people do it that actually is normal. But to relax You, i dont watch OR have tv since more than 15 yrs and so my best Friends too. Is a brainwash And i cant even follow it now for more than five minutes.

    • It is a brainwash, I think. Complete crap! That's probably what makes me think WTF?!?!?!

That shit that's on tv (tv is dying out anyways) is obnoxious mind death. I mean, if you want background sound, play music. Don't watch shit that is infested with commercials (bad commercials, mind you) for hours and hours at a time. People that keep that crap on must be mentally deficient. I can't fathom how such crap improves life. It doesn't. I could pull up research on this if anybody is all that interested.

If my dumb asshole parents come to my house, surprise, surprise there's only one tv, and it isn't attached to any cable or antenna or satellite, sorry. No, they can't turn that thing on, grrrr!

Oh, it is on wifi, lol, but my parents are too dumb to know how that works.

It's usually the old farts who haven't been exposed to online video streaming yet, who think they have to sit through a bunch of commercials.

I dont even have a TV. Just stream Hulu on my phone or laptop. But I have friends who find comfort in the background noise of the TV and so they just leave it on, because they live alone.

Why does it annoy you so much? That doesn't sound normal to me.

    • Nikkiclaire,

I probably wouldn't be friends with someone that leaves their tv on for background noise like that. Nope. Just being honest. Most of my friends have a greater knowledge base than most people about health. I, like them, know that exposure to such noise is generally unhealthy. It has negative effects on your circadian rhythms, and just general well being. That and, I can't imagine what would be so beneficial about running a blabbering tv all the time. That stuff is irritating. Anything on that tv is formulated crap meant to sell advertising slots. It's not worth your time. It's just unhealthy. Leave it off. I don't want to listen to hours of car salesmen at high volume, okay?

At least with streaming media, you can choose what you watch. Most people don't leave streaming media running continuously. Also, you can omit yourself from the shitty commercials.

I get where you're coming from but to some silence is just a disconcerting, especially for young women who live alone. If every small noise keeps you awake wondeing what it was then its just as bad for your health.

I'm not like that but some of my friends are, and I can bet after a while they don't even hear the TV. Its just white noise. They dont sit and watch it 24/7, its just on.

        • That's fair. I guess they live in an apartment with terrible sound proofing, lol.

What bugs me is less that the tv itself is on, more the fact that in my own case with my parents is that they've got multiple tv's on at fairly high volume blaring away some really maddening shit, lol. There's a reason I only sometimes stay at their house if I'm in town. Now, I just pay for a hotel. But I was at their house for the 4th of July. Ahhh, annoying!

If someone wants white noise though, try a Homedics SoundSpa. That's perfect.

If you do keep the tv on, perhaps wifi your tv to a streaming video that isn't full of obnoxious commercials. Seriously, I think those commercials are unhealthy.

It seems a waste of electricity to me, but maybe older people do it because they're lonely and it makes them feel in company.

Some people just need background noise, too.

    • charli.m

If that lonely person has any freaking decent brain cells, how about reading? Actively listening to music? Playing games? Tinkering with a project? Something for mind growth? Vegging out over an art project? Maybe they've never heard of mingling with new people for social company? Or, at the least, watch an actual movie or something?

Background noise? Have they heard of music? There's better, healthier background sounds than tv.
If they want to zone out? They really ought to try meditation. It works wonders.

Because people are different and like different things?

You're aware you have no control over what others choose to do, particularly in their own home, right? You find it annoying, that's your prerogative. They want to have a TV on all day, that's theirs. You'll live.

Maybe next time you're meditating, you should meditate on your lack of ability to put yourselves in other people's shoes and understand that while you're entitled to be annoyed by something, others are entitled to have different thought processes to you, and understand that it isn't an infringement on your rights. Nor is someone else being able to understand that perspective, while being different from their own, and stating it to you, a personal attack.

        Good luck with your meditating.

        • I agree with ya, the way you wrote that.

..except I can't believe you can't recognize wtf I'm talking about!?!?!

Okay, you're an idiot, I understand.

Fine and dandy if people want to do whatever they want unless it infringes upon another person. If a behavior is inconsiderate to others, that's like breaking the social contract or golden rule. Awful. That's when it is not to be tolerated. Um, yeah, my parents and their tv habits are their business. I'm still gonna vent. Grrrr, lol.

Hmmm, for fun, look at the data. Actually, don't do it. This might strain your thinking cap. It's fairly true that people that watch shitloads of tv are usually not all that healthy.

Sooo, if you partake in this ridiculously shitty activity, it won't affect me at all. Not a bad idea to do other things though.

          • charli.m

I can recognise what you're talking about. I'm just capabke of seeing different perspectives (that means I don't do it myself but have the brain capacity to understand that other people are different and to think of possible reasons for said behaviour).

I didn't even have a TV for years, your assumption I watch copious amounts of it simply because I dtated another perspective puts you in the same retard pile as nikkiclaire. He's also incapable of seeing that others can see a perspective that isn't your own, or that stating so isn't a personal attack.

At no point did I say it was a healthy behaviour. At not point did I say you couldn't vent. I'm sorry you can't deal with being given possibilities.

Your claim of meditation seems bogus, btw. Just saying.

I like background noise but I don't have it on loud. I used to need it to sleep but I got over that, still like to fall asleep to it though but it turns off on a timer.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
      -
    • Cool that you have found the timer! Noise while sleeping can interrupt deep sleep.

A lot of people do watch movies or something before zoning off to sleep. You should tone down the light on your screen. It's the blue light that's the issue. Brightness from light can reduce melatonin levels. The light taps the pineal gland through your eyes. Seriously, a shot of bright light can wreck your sleep inducing chemicals. It's a common cause of insomnia. A person needs two hours of low/no light after exposure to bright light for sleep induction to normalize.

    • Leaving the tv on for pets...

That's actually understandable. But would you torture your pets by leaving the tv on an offensively obnoxious cheap bastard channel that blares high volume commercials every couple of minutes? Would you do that to your pets? I hope not. Cats and dogs have far more sensitive hearing than humans do. Yeah, their ears are designed for a relatively quiet environment to detect noises, if your dog or cat was out in the wild, that is. Let's consider what their ears are designed for. Ears aren't there for constant exposure to noise, no. You should be very selective about the noise quality that gently distracts, but doesn't stress them out. I have no idea if you know this. I'll just hope that you do.

Anyways, I wouldn't torture my pets with obnoxiously high volume noisy shitty tv, no. I just know better. Often animals just tolerate such things, but it isn't all that healthy for them (or humans, but some people are beyond stupid).

        • I don't think I know everything. I'm very evidence-based. I look at research and if the shoe fits, sometimes I'm probably reasonably correct. In this case, I can find other objective individuals that would support my reasoning. TV's left on like I mentioned above is entirely unhealthy, or it's an indication of an individual that is unhealthy, or partakes in an activity that has a negative effect.

Have you not read about noise exposure and stress? There's a reason we have noise regulations, for example.

Here's a teeny tiny article for your own self-education:

          How Background TV Undermines Well-Being
          https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/minding-the-body/201305/how-background-tv-undermines-well-being

A lot of people watch tv or leave it on, but research is ample to show that this is just not good for your health. Physiologically, it's disruptive to healthy sleep patterns, and it's not all that beneficial to your brain health.

Find me some kind of credible evidence that says differently, please?

I can laugh at this though. Yeah, I'm making a mountain out of a molehill. This doesn't matter in the great grand scheme of life. True, let people do as they please, especially if what they do is their own business. Yes, I agree with you there.

I'll just visit less a wee bit less often. I can joke too. I'm not always so serious. But, I do hate tv!!!!! So much so, I want to remotely disable them from afar!

Fair enough. Maybe instead of visiting less often get some noise reducing headphones.

I'm not implying t.v is good for you, like I said I dont even own one. I just think that for every choice we make there beneficial and negative consequences. I don't think in terms of black and white or ultimate truths sorry.

You seem to and thats fine but it comes across as condescending and arrogant.

I just tolerate their tv habits when I'm there. Actually, I say nothing to them. My option is to persuade them to watch a movie or something other than their crazy preference for obnoxious violence-infested news channels.

I came across as arrogant? Yeah, I can see that. It's a bit lecture-y, I suppose. My apology. I did a bunch of public health research at school, okay.

In fact, children from more noisy homes do suffer ill effects from this type of sound pollution that include less cognitive growth, delayed language skills, increased anxiety, and impaired resilience, according to a Purdue University professor in a related press release.
