Is it normal for me to consult a dictionary whenever i encounter a new word?

Whenever I read books, I always encounter new and difficult words for my vocabulary. Even though I don't want to consult the dictionary, I still feel like I have to. Normally I wouldn't want to consult the dictionary every now and then 'cause it spoils the action whenever I'm in reading a narrative, but something kind of urges me to do so. I just can't ignore the urge, 'cause if I do, anxiety occurs, stopping me from further reading the book, unless I consult the dictionary for the new word. I think it is an obsessive-compulsive compulsion, but I'm not sure. And sometimes it's really weird 'cause whenever I encounter a term describing measurement, like, for example, 500 pounds, my anxiety forces me to get a weighing scale and measure 500 pounds before I continue reading. It's very tedious.

    consulting a dictionary? Normal.
Weighing a measurement that you come across? Not normal.

I'm the same way. It's a great way to increase your vocabulary (as well as word-a-day calendars). A kindle (and possibly other e-readers) has an in-built dictionary that lets you look up words and some other information instantly.
Btw I take this obsession even further. When a song is mentioned in a book, I have to look it up on youtube.

I also read the dictionary as a child and must check if I see a word that doesn't seem to be spelt right.

I also do the word checking and always have done since I learned to read. My Dad told me to also find a new word on the page where l found the answer..so that doubles your reward. I used to work a night shift and sometimes if it was quiet, l always had a book to read...the damn dictionary !!
