Is it normal for kids to go through a phase of biting/chewing on everything?

I remember when I was about 7-9, I went through this phase where I had this feeling of wanting to bite on things with my front teeth and chew on them. It became such a habit. Anything that looked tough or rubbery I'd want to bite on it. I'm reminded of it now cos I'm looking through some of my old things and a lot of them have small chunks bitten out of them. Things like books covers, the rubber grip of my tennis rackets, anything leather, etc.

Oral fixation. Not the kind my girlfriend has, but look it up. It is a part of Freud's stages of develeopment. Seems that you encountered this stage much later than normal though.

Yeah I did that too. We had a rubber armrest infront of our keyboard and I wanted to bite a chunk of it out.

I'm not sure what age I was, I think from maybe about 8 on for a few years, I used to tear the corners off the pages of books I was reading and eat the paper.
