If you're addicted to a website or the internet, how did you quit?

I use reddit pretty much everyday but it's a cesspool. But I can't stop using it. Anyone have a similar problem? How did you quit?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

How I quit is getting rid of links that are related to the website and never touching it again.

It might work but sometimes you may be tempted to come back.

I got addicted to Facebook soon after it became popular. Around 2008 I guess. For nearly six years, I wasted nearly 4-5 hours of my life on a daily basis, liking photos, commenting, and trying to keep up with others. For some reason, many were high school classmates I always hated because they bullied me back then.

It was an entire class of sixty boys and girls. After graduation, I moved to another town and had vowed to never see them again. I should've stuck to that decision because they didn't change a bit in all these years. We even had unofficial high school reunions and it was a terrible idea to rejoin that group. The mean girls by now turned into flat-out bitchy women and they simply refused to talk to me. The boys were better-mannered though, but they still made jokes at my expense.

That vicious physical bullying simply gave way to backhanded compliments and a sarcastic, condescending tone. Every time I'd put up a nice picture in Facebook, those high school morons would try to pull me down in front of my newer contacts.

Also my whole family was there on Facebook which made it a real nightmare. I had people from my workplaces adding me as a contact, so everyone could see now how I was getting my ass kicked virtually everyday on Facebook. One of those bullies even compared me to "toilet paper" with the obvious implication that I only deserve to get my ass kicked in life...that I am a real loser. Don't think the employers didn't pick up on that reference as I did feel undervalued at work for so many years.

Facebook worsened my PTSD with the bullying episodes in high school, and I was re-living the horror every single day of my life. It gave me stress and I couldn't focus on work sometimes. The arrival of Facebook chat and Instagram only made it more unbearable (I decided not to go through the ordeal all over again by registering an Instagram account).

One fine day in March 2015, I decided to put an end to all of this misery. By that time, I had already unfriended some of the most vicious trolls from high school. I unfriended every single one of my high school friends...

I didn't do it all at once but spaced those deletions a week apart or something. By around a month's time, almost all of them were gone except 2-3 bullies who to be honest, weren't as bad as the rest. Then I thought why should I have even them in my Facebook so I threw them out like the rest. To my surprise, except for one of those bullies, no-one else called me on my phone to know why I unfriended them. These were people I was running into often in shopping malls, restaurants etc. Now none of them were in my Facebook. I felt a new sense of freedom.

After that, my Facebook account became dormant for around 2-3 years. I no longer felt frightened by having an account, and continued to pass it to new contacts. It was only in 2019 I decided to deactivate and delete my Facebook account because I no longer needed to be on social media.

Today email is my preferred mode to communicate with known or first-time contacts. I even have the confidence to appear on a Zoom call and my PTSD problem due to high-school bullying seems to have disappeared. I ran into some of those bullies in recent months and their behavior towards me has drastically changed. They now talk to me with a sense of awe and excitement and want to get back in my life, but I have already burned those bridges. I'm in no mood to forgive these assholes for what they did to me, and will continue to ignore them for the rest of their lives.

That reminds me of a story I read a few years ago. A guy chopped off his hand to try to rid himself of an addiction he had to a computer game. XD

Grade-A idea right there! Instead of deleting the game, or selling the computer... delete your own hand XD

I feel like that guy was an idiot. He used a permanent solution for a temporary problem.

Contribute to and escalate existing shittiness on the site until either you get permabanned or the site becomes so much of a burning hellhole that even you no longer choose to keep coming back.

I felt like I was on instagram too much. So I deleted it. Pretty easy.

Unplug the internet connection to the computer at all times unless it is required for work.

Perhaps you should delete your account?
