I want to move to alaska, and i don't know why

I really don't know why but for a while I've been considering it, off and on. I have family and friends here that I really love (good relationships) with no problems. I live with my parents, pay rent and various bills, since living in my area is expensive (won't give exact location - but within New England, USA) and they'd rather me stay home and make money, since I'm a good kid and productive. I have a boyfriend, we've been together for a year and he plans living together within the next few years either staying where we are, or New Hampshire.

Now that I'm writing I feel like wanting to move out is to be more independent for myself. I'm a bit of a baby, I'm 22 but unfortunately have the mentality of someone a few years younger - naturally childish and all, but I can be mature when the situation calls for it.

Job-wise, my current job is flexible in that I could simply ask to be transferred to any of the two thousand locations worldwide, so long as that particular location will have a place for me. There are three in Alaska total, and I've been checking out the areas where they are (two in Anchorage, one in Juneau) so if I move to either of those locations I'm already guaranteed a job.

But I don't understand why Alaska. I could simply move to the next state over. I do not go out much, to save money. Part of me wonders if it matches up with my fantasy.

I just want to live somewhere small and cozy, I love wildlife and rural areas. I just want to ride horses and walk my (future) dog before and after work. But I could do that around here, so I can't understand why move to Alaska. Either way, moving doesn't have to be permanent. I could always visit and try it out, see how I like it - but what if I decide to stay?

I'd hate to break my mother's heart, and as for my boyfriend... that's a whole nother issue. He's pretty much got his life figured out, you know? He'll be 30 this year. He already has his career established, he wants to support me and buy a house, but I don't like that. I don't know how I feel about it. The more I'm writing, I think the more I'm understanding. My life so far just feels like I'm going along with the flow and doing whatever anyone else is doing. I'm comfortable and safe, and have yet to take the reigns and steer in my own direction.

But you know what, I think now's the time for a change. There's one thing holding me back (I think I might have ADHD that's severely interfering with my life - but after years of procrastinating I finally have an apt with my Dr. to see if I do, and if it's true, what I can have done about it to become a better, more focused person.)

I think I pretty much solved my own problem...but I'll take anyone's input or two cents here.

  • If you’re considering anything new it’s always nice to test the waters first and see of you can see yourself enjoying it. Take a trip and see how it is in those locations for your job. Maybe check out appartment prices and neighborhood all that fun stuff and think on it some more. Wouldn’t hurt to look first.

Same. I can't even stand five minutes in the cold.

I don't mind temperatures in the 30s and 20s, but when it's colder than that I'm like fuck this. Also, why on Earth would I want to live in a place where milk us $20 a gallon? I really hate all those shows on cable about weirdos living off the grid in Alaska.

I mean how can I enjoy dessert without milk? 😉 I started doing this new thing where I pour half a glass of whole milk, and make the rest of it unsweetened coconut milk. 😋

Wait what? Is milk really THAT much in Alaska? I drink lactose free milk and depending on the store in my area, that can sometimes cost twice as much as regular milk. It probably costs so much in Alaska.
So you're flavoring your milk with coconut? Interesting. Sounds like a much healthier alternative than chocolate syrup XD

I really just love mixing my whole milk with unsweetened coconut milk, and it's really good when I add chocolate malt Ovaltine to it! One thing I really miss is guava candy paste.

I want to go on vacation someplace tropical. I used to live in South Florida when I was 22/23 year old, and I can honestly say that one place where I never felt depressed.

I think I saw that milk was really expensive in Alaska on television. I dunno, Alaska freaks me out. I'm not a rugged outdoor type of person, I'm more of a suburban, indoor cat, and dog type of person, yanno? The people on this one show on television who live off the land in Alaska just seem so uncivilized, they remind me of hillbillies, it kinda scares me.

When I was with my first ex-husband who was from Greenville, Mississippi his mother, bless her heart, really scared me. She had a lot of tooth loss, and when I see someone like that it freaks me out, because I feel like that person probably thinks it's normal to neglect themselves like that, and I get to thinking that such a person would expect me to neglect myself, or my cat. I told someone recently that my cat had his teeth cleaned a few years back, and she told me that her husband doesn't go to the dentist. I thought, sure, I know that stuff can be expensive, but if people neglect it then they are more likely to lose their teeth, and I know that there are low cost options out there. Sometimes I can get kinda skittish when it comes to weird hick stuff.

            Sorry for the weird rant.

Nah it's ok. So you prefer the warm weather. Honestly I'd want to live somewhere where it's always sunny and winter doesn't exist.
If milks that much, I'm guessing cold places like that can't have farms or something. Lol
I've been trying to take better care of my teeth lately. I've put them through a lot with all the buffet nonsense. XD It creeps me out to see missing teeth as well.

Believe me, Alaska should be the last place where you want to live. Life there is not relaxed and laid back as you imagine. The harsh winters will wreck your mind and body.

Alaska is only great if you love screensavers and winter sports and game. Move to Wisconsin or Montana if you want to get good summers and not a early September snowfall.

You need an adventure, girl. And it's a good way to get the more self-reliant, mature mentality that you want to have. Get a good thick down coat for winter and move up there! Do research on Alaskan lifestyles, and recreation. Make friends when you get there and you'll do just fine. If you decide to return to the northeast after a couple of years, you'll always remember your grand adventure. The midnight sun is calling you.
