I think sodas should have warning labels on them

Soda is addictive, makes you fat, causes cancer and is just generally bad for you. I don't see why sodas don't have warning labels on them just like cigarettes do.

  • Back in the day we all knew what was bad for us, and made the choice to either ignore the facts and suffer the possible consequences, or make sensible choices and hope to reap the benefits. Why in modern day, with so much more information about any topic of choice available, at the touch of a button in most homes, do people have this obsession with sticking labels on everything telling us what we already know. It's obvious to all but the incredibly stupid, who probably wouldn't read the label anyway, that if you consume to much sugar and don't exercise you will end up a fat slob. Why do we need a label on everything to tell us that?

The problem is that the sugar content of processed foods is not always obvious. For example, manufacturers add a lot of sugar to food branded as low-fat in order to create "mouth appeal".

I agree that it's everyone's personal responsibility to decide what they consume and how much. And, yeah, if you're nutritionally savvy, you take the time to read nutrition labels, and you can relate those numbers to real life, then that can make a difference to what you buy.

However, I think the vast majority of people would be shocked by this easily-understood depiction of how much sugar there is in soft drinks:

      • I get your point but really don't think an extra label will make any difference. These things already come labelled up with what's in them, but still doesn't stop people consuming excessive amounts. Everyone with a bit of common sense knows how bad energy drinks are for you, doesn't stop people letting their kids drink 3 or 4 a day.

Allergies. If it contains something you are allergic to, you can possibly die. You wanna take that risk, since you don't know what's in it?

          • But you do no what's in it. Everything already comes with a list of ingredients, has done for years. That's my whole point, every thing is already incredibally well labelled, so why would we need yet another label just to tell us it's bad for us, when common sense already tells us that anyway.

There is a push in the UK for warnings about sugar the content of foods.

Obviously, the companies that make huge profits from exploiting our instinctive desire for sweet stuff are resisting, and when it comes to government, money talks a lot louder than the health of the public.

People become inured to warning labels especially when they're overused and easily ignored.

Labeling extensively the dangers of something that is not dangerous or hazardous would result in people ignoring them, and likely as a result, ignoring other labels on things that _should_ be labeled. Now that I've elaborated more precisely on what I meant, you should be able to understand your smug ass comment sounds stupid.

What is also scary are the number of young kids with rotten teeth. My workmate had a son who was 6 at the time, he was getting fillings & extractions done. "No big deal" she told me, "A lot of the kids at his school are".

I never mentioned labelling in my post. It was a general comment regarding dental caries in young children caused by sugary soft drinks. Another health risk posed by such drinks. How parents are ignorant as to how damaging they can be.

Yeah i get that but with proper brushing, anything short of eating the inedible like rocks and metal won't damage your teeth. If anything they should be teaching them how to brush properly while their teeth aren't permanent.

Since this is posted in thoughts, how about we remove all warning labels, helmets, seat belts and safety caps on medicne.

Let's let nature take it course.

Yeah let's let thousands of people die from overdosing on their medication or as a result of allergies. Smart idea

Here in ireland they have warnings on affects on children. Also if they are addictive they contain caffeine and as a result, cause extreme weight loss

Looking at a can of Pepsi right now, it says 150 calories per can in a special obvious circle thingy (separate from the nutrition facts label). It also has them on the box, calories, sugar, saturated fat and sodium, also separate from the nutrition facts.

I don't really think sodas are addictive, but they do put caffeine in most sodas, which is addictive. Most people don't know, but caffeine is actually a psychoactive drug; a stimulant. They do list the mg per drink but its basically in the fine print, mostly next to the ingredients.

I think most people know. Also amount of caffeine per 100ml is the first thing i look for in the soda. It's normally at the bottom if the bottle in bolder print than ingredients, usually with a warning at least in ireland

Cigarettes are far more unhealthy and addictive. As for making you fat, that depends on the person's lifestyle. I've been drinking soda for years with no effect on my weight. In fact, I could gain some weight.
