I'm obsessed with exercise, iin?

Okay, so, I'm a teenage girl. And like all other teenage girls out there I want to be fit. I have severe OCD, and I take meds for it. It's almost an obsession of mine because i HAVE to work out. Like, I do 60 crunches before bed, or else I can FEEL my stomach expanding. And the next day I can literally SEE it getting rounder. Same with my legs. I use my mom's old Thighmaster (gold & lbx) and I do 3 sets of 60 of each (aka 6 sets of 60). Once again, if I don't feel that burn, then I feel my thighs getting HUGE. I can't sleep at night if I don't do it. It will keep me up, tossing and turning. And I don't have an eating disorder. I mean yea, I hate my body and all and I wish I was a size 2, but it doesn't stop me from eating. Except for this one time back in 7th grade when I would like stop eating and if I did eat anything I would throw it up in the bathroom and cry because I hated myself. But this is different, I've gotten over it. I'm just wondering if it's normal to be this obsessed with exercise?

Yes, this is bad because it is dictating your life. You can't sleep if you don't do crunches before bed? The difference between dedication and obsession is that obsessions are based in unrealistic goals. Honey, if you are taller than 5'3", a size two may not be a healthy goal.

If you lived a healthy and active lifestyle, you would not need to "exercise" to stay fit. Exercise would be part of your daily routine. Not something that prevents you from living. I don't walk to stay fit. I walk 3 miles to get home from work. I ride my bike 15-40 miles on the weekend because it is fun, not for "exercise." And I eat healthy food because it gives me the energy to sustain an active lifestyle. If I don't eat healthy, I can't play. And I like to play.

I agree. The problem is that it is controlling her life.

I also agree that eating healthy foods and using proper supplements is the best way to be able to sustains your lifestyle. I buy a lot of my supplements on NutritionLifestyles.com. It's a great site; just thought I'd share. :-)

Your OCD is not properly controlled if you are still having intrusive thoughts and are compelled to act. You need to see a physician, or a therapist, to help you with these thoughts - and potentially a case of body dismorphic disorder.

  • I can't find where I read it, but there is an exercise compulsion disorder linked with bulimia and anorexia. I was never diagnosed with it, but I believe I had it. Just be careful.

Get over yourself. There are far more pressing issues to deal with in this world than your self centered teen angst.

Why would people vote this as not normal? Lazy people probably voted no. By the way, "Obssesion is a term used by the lazy consensus to describe the dedicated." I love working out. Well, lifting weights. I feel like whenever I miss a day I lose a part of me. I have a passion for this. I love the pump, I love the iron, I love the challenge of having to pick up heavier weight each week. And I eat healthy also. But don't worry. This is not a "disorder" or "abnormal." this is what you like. And don't think negative. Mind is everything. Just remember to eat to provide the macronutrients your body needs, especially after your workout! Stay motivated...

Having a love for something or a passion for something is entirely different than having an illness and unknowingly feeding it as this young girl is clearly doing. Obviously, she knows that there is something wrong somewhere or she wouldn't have posted a question about it! Next time, you might want to try inquiring with someone about your answers before posting them b/c heaven forbid she is in a worse place now because of something you posted. Hopefully, she listened to our words above yours. Exercising the way that she does in the mindset that she is in when she does is not healthy- I would hope that even you would be smart enough to see that... you shouldn't play with people's lives like that. Your advice is for those who are healthy and exercise in a healthy mindset.
