I left my clothes in the washer over the month long break? help

I live in a college apartment and forgot to put my clothes in the dryer before I left for the break! So they have been chilling in the washer for a month! I'm not back in my college town yet but my roommate just noticed and texted me! I can only imagine how the load smells! what should I do to get rid of the odor???????

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Nickvey makes valid points about cotton rotting, so you may find some of 100% cotton and mixed-fiber clothes are unusable.

Supposedly, washing the clothes again, adding a cup of either vinegar or baking soda to the water, and leaving them to soak for a few hours will get rid of the mildew smell. I'm a little doubtful about that, but would be worth a try.

wet cotton rots in a month , so even if you get the smell out they will rip apart. could be fun in class if you dont wear underwear. thats just the way it goes man , ruined. you might stuff them with straw and make a scarecrow out of them. or wash and dry fold and leave to get stolen at the laundry. then sombody else can wear them to class. they should fall apart first time out.

If possible, after rewashing hang them out in the fresh air

You might have to wash them 2-3-4 times to get rid of the musty smell. Or in the laundry detergent isle there are some smell pretty beads you put in with wash. I can remember what there called. But if you dry them that very well could set the smell into the clothes.
