I have pet reptiles

I have pet reptiles, and I love them a lot. I did used to buy them from breeders but since then I’ve been sticking to adoption since there are a lot of reptiles looking for homes believe it or not. I spend a good part of my day taking care of them, it’s something I enjoy. I currently have a blue tongue skink, uromastyx lizard, panther chameleon, and a reeves turtle. I care for them the best I can and take them to the vet when needed. I get a lot of judgement for it, people don’t understand why I would choose to have reptiles instead of dogs, rodents, birds, etc. I just enjoy watching them and taking care of them, it feels very rewarding to earn their trust instead of getting it (usually) unconditionally from a dog or something. I do like snakes as well, don’t have any at the moment but I would totally adopt one in the future. I wish that these animals weren’t as vilified, sure there are some dangerous species but the majority of them are completely harmless and uninterested in ruining your day.

  • Dogs are far, far too hyperactive for my tastes. Even lazy breeds are too energetic. I don't hate dogs, but I would never want to actually take care of one.

My highschool job was working at a pet store that (mostly) strayed from selling cats or dogs. I was in charge of the avian and aquatic section of the store due to my previous experience with birds, but the other sections were nice as well

    • Yeah I’ve tried taking care of dogs (Though pet sitting and stuff) and I just can’t bond with them. I’m autistic and the smells, noises, hyperactivity, all get to me. I enjoy having cats but my faves are my reptiles, they’re quiet and predictable

  • I love lizards. Unfortunately they need to be fed live insects, and therefore I will never get one myself.

    • Not all of them! I have a uromastyx lizard and he’s completely vegetarian

  • I have a bearded dragon currently but I’ve had geckos, anoles, and turtles, in the past
Love the dude, he’s so chill and helps reduce food scraps from when we have salads. Really a friendly and super cool critter
I agree I think reptiles are one of the best adoption options, you don’t really “miss out” on anything

    • It's 2023 why are you misgendering? How do you know what they identify as?

      • As a reptile keeper, they aren’t smart enough to understand what glass is, let alone have a concept of gender

        • So now you're discriminating against reptiles? You don't know that the pet reptile might not identify as a he. Get help you prejudiced fuck.

          • As an actual transgender person, please stop trolling. It’s harmful to our already shit reputation. People like you are part of the reason why I get death threats on a daily basis for something out of my control
