Hmmm...Well there are so many sub-genres to the heavy metal genre the making a general statement like, "I hate heavy metal" is kind of ignorant. I like bands such as: Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden etc. They don't display the things you "hate" in heavy metal like: screaming, jumping up and down, and make up. They do have long hair though, but so do I and if you don't like that...so what. I do however like some bands that display some of the things you hate. Pantera is awesome! I like a variety of music. I'll listen to a heavy metal record and then thrown in a solo acoustic guitar record right after. I love heavy metal and I'm not an angry, hateful guy. The notion that heavy metal fans are disturbed, angry, and hateful is absurd. Is it normal to hate heavy metal? I guess so, but your opinion is in the minority. There are more people that like it then there are that hate it.

My experience with metal heads is that they're usually a degree smarter and deeper than mainstream listeners. Plus don't say metal takes no skill because metal has the most skilled musicians in the industry, they play the fastest, most complicated, and most melodic music out there. Plus screaming adds alot of energy to a song and can be very melodic, just listen to the haunted or Amon amarth

  • Heavy metal is awesome; and these words are coming from a black female. Oh yea and people who listen to heavy metal are not angry. They just love the energy it gives them.

Talentless? Nearly every part of metal is hard to replicate: guitars, drums, bass and especially vocals.

Modern pop music can NEVER replicate those, they autotune everything anyway.

Why don't you try screaming for once? Hurts? Metal vocalists handle harsh vocals everyday. Try playing a guitar for once, most pop, r&b and hip hop fags can't even bother to learn an instrument.

Marilyn Manson is not considered metal, so is ACDC(classic rock). MM has one of the hardest vocals to replicate.

i also signed up just to say this ummm lemme just tell you all this:

what yur all saying is a whole lot of dickshit to me exept for those posts by metalheads and that

A: the vocals in metal actually take years to perfect (i know im still trying to perfect it) and that people always think theyr just screaming into a mic but look closely at the music videos you can see that the vocalists are holding the mics righht in front of their mouths unlike other vocalists the screaming cannot be done by simply screaming at the top of yur lungs... (you try screaming just as loud as you wud when you normally talk)

B: Metal is not angry music for angry people because most metal songs i know arnt about hate or death at all

C: Metal is one of the biggest genre in the world so dont fuckin hate on it because i doubt most of you even know it that well (unless ur a metalhead)

D: When a guy is headbanging it does not mean hes high or retarded it just means he likes the music. whn he is dancing to rap music or classical or anyother shit like that then hes high or retarded...

E: Playing metal actually takes more skill like playing a solo is way harder then a violin
playing the bass guitar is harder than a cello
how screaming is way way harder then beat boxing or rapping

F: "death to all but metal" steel panther

    G: metalheads r awesome

H: marilyn mansons not metal theyr hardcore..

    • PoachedWomb

      A: fair enough.

B: alot of the metal i own is about death, there's a band called death, and a sub-genre called death metal. metal is quite death-oriented, but it's not to be taken seriously. it's the musical equivalent of a horror movie, i.e. entertainment.

C: is that even a point?

D: a guy dancing to rap music or any other type of music is enjoying it, just like metalheads headbanging are enjoying it. dont be a dick.

E: playing a solo is harder than playing a violin/cello = total bullshit. it depends how hard the solo is, and how hard the violin/cello piece is. all instruments take time and effort to perfect (why the hell would you choose a violin and a cello, two of the most cherished instruments in musical history, as examples?? duh???)
also, rapping is not easy, and neither is beat boxing. didn't i tell you to stop being a dick?

F: other genres are just as good as metal, in fact listening to nothing but metal would be incredibly boring. no one cares what steel panther think.

G: shut up, you give metal fans a bad name.

H: no, manson writes goth rock and industrial rock, and probably ventures into a couple other styles, but does not write hardcore.

      I: just die.

Marilyn Manson isn't Metal. I love Metal though but my prefernce is symphonic metal. Like Lacuna Coil or Within Temptation. You should look them up sometime if you aren't into the "Screaming thrashing" kind of metal. I like some Heavy metal bands though and I see nothing wrong with liking it. Personally id rather sit through an entire Cannibal Corpse album than listen to P. diddy, but that's just me.

For all you retards out there

Heavy Metal is the first incarnation of Metal music than spread to many subgenres like Death,Thrash,Doom,Power,Black etc.

Metal music takes alot of talent to play especially the soloing which takes years of practice to fully acquire.

its Marilyn Manson, not "Marrion Manson" and not all the metal man were make up, Marilyn Manson just wears that so kids can buy his shit music, it is hardly metal at all.

and its not angry music for angry people!!!

your forgetting about bands like Dark Tranquility,Paradise Lost,Porcupine Tree,Black Sabbath,Anathema, no gore and death with those bands.

You need to learn more about Metal before you start going around saying it sucks, some people are just truly ignorant.

U are an idiot (the author of this topic) Metal takes talent to play the instruments, and for the screaming and growling, that takes years of vocal training. It's better than that gay rap shit. That takes NOO talent, talkin to a beat, u gotta be fuckin kidding me.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
      -
    • 343Boy

Screaming and growling doesn't take "years of training", you think the first metal bands who used screaming, tried for years to perfect their techniques? No, they just screamed their asses off.

      Comment Hidden ( show )
  • BigMuthaDog

Wow. Just have to say that both sides sound like they're full of hate. What's the deal, people?! Why is everyone so angry and hateful? Anyways, I just wanted to say that whether you like it or not, metal music is a valid form of musical expression. Just because you don't understand it does not mean that "it sucks" or "it requires no talent." On the contrary, most modern metal music is extremely technical and precise, and requires years of practice to play. For example, there are constant time signature changes, complicated rhythm patterns at ridiculous speeds, intricate arpeggios, etc. All of this requires an excellent understanding of music theory. There's more to the music than the just harsh vocals, which actually require training and skill. If you disagree, I dare you to go scream for more than five minutes and see what happens to your throat. Keep in mind that I am not referring to bands like Marilyn Manson, Limp Bizkit, or Korn. However, they do deserve respect as musicians. I'm talking about death metal, thrash metal, hardcore metal, progressive metal, etc. So stop being lame, people. And that includes the metal heads, too.

    Gutwrenching screams fill the air
The rancid smell of burning hair
    Screaming in excruciating pain
    Blood boils over, warping veins
Burnt skull collapses onto melting brain Spontaneous death, up in flames

While there are some "metal" bands that fit into the stereotype that everyone seems to be railing against there are plenty of other bands that defy the stereotype. Bands such as Iron Maiden, Dream Theater, Nevermore, and others with operatic vocals that you don't hear anywhere else in popular music, and extremely technical, precise instrument playing. I happen to like metal, along with classical, jazz, blues, and other forms of music. However, a lot of people here are proving you right about metal fans being "immature" and "angry." Honestly though, it's perfectly normal to hate a certain type of music. I hate country, mainly because of the racist hillbilly stereotype associated with it, along with the whiny songs, and that god-awful twang, but that's my personal opinion that's no better than anyone else's.

Of course it's normal. There are lots of people who don't like heavy metal. There are also lots of people who don't like whatever genre of music is your favourite, and that's also normal. Different people have different taste in music. Just don't be an asshole about it and it's fine.

why? why are we even arguing about this? people have their own taste in music and any true metal fan would know what it's like to be hated on for your music taste. Just accept that some people don't like it and keep listening to metal. Don't bother with the little narrow minded idiot who has clearly only listened to no more than two metal songs in his lifetime.

I personally think all pop singers are talentless and unoriginal. I'm truly convinced that Nicki Minaj woke up one day and said "I think I'm going to be a singer today!"
But I wouldn't hate anyone because they have a different taste in music to me. Last time I thought like that, I was twelve years old (and a metal fan even way back then)How old are you?

Firstly, his name is MARILYN Manson, not "marrion manson". Secondly, Manson doesn't make heavy metal, nor does he shout. He's very light rock, in my opinion. Secondly, there are a LOT of bands that don't actually have rough or growling vocals. They're not all male bands, they don't all wear makeup. If you know nothing about metal, how can you hate it? You clearly have only listened to a very small fraction of it!

In my personal opinion, I believe metal is far better and morew complex than 'popular music'. In pop music, the lyrics are so simple, and are generally about sex, like Rihanna etc. Metal requires talent from all band members combined together, and their lyrics are often very beatiful and poetic, look up the words to Cradle of Filth - Dusk and Her Embrace, and compare it to shit like Tinie Tempah, or Lady Gaga, or Rihanna. You can't really, can you? Pop music is just very untalented people trying to make money with awful music that anyone could make on a very basic music making programme.

There's alot more to metal than gutteral and screaming vocals. Check out bands like Symphony X, Opeth, Firewind, or Iced Earth on youtube. Besides excellent vocals, the musicianship is top-notch. Seems like most people only hear vocals and lyrics and ignore the music thats being played.

Ah, I remember when I was just like you...
Just discovered the world of metal?
And you've read it as trying to be aggressive and "metal is superior"?
It's ridiculous naive attitudes like this that give outsiders false impressions about metal.
You'll look back on this one day and realise how stupid you sound.
And I remember being told pretty much what I'm telling you by an older, maturer metal fan and ignoring it at the time.
Yes, metal is aggressive but you'll find that most fans and artists are not. For instance, you only have to read the credits given by band members in albums to hear them call their wives "sugar pie" (Robb Flynn, Machine Head) and use other 'soppy' terminology.
We use the music to release the aggression and negative feelings within us. Keep the aggression for the circle pits and have some respect for those that aren't part of the metal culture and stop letting those who are down.
I know you won't take any notice of this, I don't blame you, you're young and naive like I once was but hopefully one day you'll look back and realise how embarassing you are being...

also i have signed up purely to comment on this to say that your post is particularly narrow minded, so you dont like heavy metal music yourself thats your choice and your opinion if you dont like it dont listen to it...also the skill and dedication to become any good at doing any kind of metal whether your the drummer or the singer is incredible.

not to mention the fact that actually rock and metal music have some of the most meaningful heart felt lyrics that if you listen to them you can identify with them on a more personal level than you can with any mainstream music...as mainstream/pop/rap is mostly about menial things like partying and getting drunk and f***ing anything that moves, plus i personally find the lyrics within rap music to be more violent and aggressive than any metal or rock song i have heard.

and as many have said its all about the energy that is created from the music that entices people then the lyrics trap you there...(or at least thats how it is for me)

as i say every one will have their own opinions and mine is metal all the way \m/

I have been living with my husband for 10 years and he listens to all types of metal and I have tried to listen to it too, he has over 100 albums, so I think I've listened to quite a bit don't you, but after 10 years of being subjected to it it makes me feel angry just from being in the same house as it. I come from a jazz background so appreciate that the musicians in metal are usually very talented but unfortunately the overwhelming joy that my husband feels with metal just makes me feel drained and angry. Being slightly selfish he insists on playing whilst I'm in the house. I have found that this is the case with most metal fans, that they really don't give a toss how the music affects others around them. Hopefully somebody can prove me wrong.

The negative tones have shown to negatively effect health! They are detrimental to health of a plant and have been shown to kill them. As such, I have been weaning myself of of metal music or music that has a rock-ish sound in general. I noticed that I feel like shit when I listen to metal, especially for along period of time.

I know what you mean, but it is the tones that are negative.

Shut up, you sound like such a moron. It's pop whore trash and criminal thug rap that have a destablising effect on social mores which prevent the formation of healthy families.

    Hiya,

Liking heavy metal is a phase for a lot of people. I still like some of it but I much prefer quieter stuff, and when I went to a concert I wished I had gone years ago. Just reading those lyrics makes me feel down. I prefer to listen to songs where said torture happened 100 years ago.

I used to say it was all about the music, not looks, but I looked bloody awful – black nail varnish, t-shirts that didn't fit me properly, straggly hair (now chopped off and dyed), threatening look in my eyes. I shudder to look at photos of myself now.

If my friends from college could see me now they'd be shocked.

Some of you lot seem very defensive about your music choices; correct me if I’m wrong (which I probably am) but it's almost like you're not sure whether you like it yourself !!

Heavy metal is noise, not music.

I gotta agree something about grown men with trying to act tough and hard, and yet singing like a lady opera singer and having long hair and wearing leather is extremely homosexual.

I also think that heavy metal is an angry, disturbing, loud music, and the singers are not talented at all unless if you think screaming and jumping up and down with you shirt of is a talent. I bet those singers would not be able to sing the song "wheels on the bus go round and round" if their life depended on it. Come on just listen to it even the words are bizarre and how about that long hair? it looks as if they haven't washed it or cut it in a year or two. Also as someone earlier mentioned it shows from some of the people commenting in favor of this music that the listeners are angry and disturbed themselves. I think it is normal for someone not to like a specific type of music.

you say metal singers aren't talent, then go on to talk about their hair, their jumping up and down, and whether they wear a shirt or not, which has what to do with the music exactly? i agree some of the people commenting here sound pretty ridiculous, yourself included, and that it's fans like those here that make most normal metal fans look bad (i'm pretty sure alot of them are not 18, and if they are they need to get out and be around people more), but most metal fans aren't angry at all, but are normal people who enjoy the intensity and energy of heavy music, regardless of how they dress or how they enjoy the music itself. jumping around is fun; ask house of pain.

Hahaha brain power, its pretty much the dumbest form of music out there. When I see metal kids I feel depressed at what losers they are, hoping they grow out of it soon & look back on it as an embarassing phase. A 30 year old metalhead is a pointless waste of oxygen.
