How to reject a religious person politely

So I am not a Catholic. My family is in fact Christian. I keep getting into it with my Catholic freind since they believe I am sinning for not being wed. Apperently they were under the impression that I can quote the entire bible and no I can't. I never stated I could and am unsure of how they got this impression. They believe I am wrong for simply not being wed but I honestly can not afford it and recently stopped drinking. I am attempting to become stable, finish college and get a good job but they seem insistent I find a random person to knock up as the "Bible commands!" Most Christians I talked to believe In abstinence and not forced marriage to someone you despise for the sake of marriage itself. I can't keep throwing scripture at them cuase they simply say "I disagree, I got a scripture that's better than yours!" What's more obnoxious is they are literally divorced. Why are they so obsessed with it? Should I ghost them again? I did for a bit and they came back later seeming like a normal behavior and now they bringing up religion again. It's very annoying cuase I don't believe in thier bastardized version of what they call a religion.

Repeat after me, (I always use this line whenever anyone tries to proselytize or drag me into their cult), in a friendly and calm voice:

"My Friend, I am of a different Denomination than yours. And I am quite happy with the Church I go to. We have very different views on Christianity, and as I do not wish to argue with you about trivialities, I suggest we pick a different topic of discussion. If you cannot respect my desire to end this line of conversation, I'm afraid we no longer can be friends. Because I refuse to be friends with people who don't respect me. Yes, that tenet is part of my religion. Respect is a core component of friendship. If you can't even respect me, and my wishes to end this conversation and talk about something else... anything else, then we cannot be friends."

If this gentle suggestion makes them angry, you know they were never a Godly person to begin with.

Sounds like an extremist religious person tbh. I'm Catholic technically, but I don't practice. There's nothing wrong really with being devoted to whatever religion you choose, but it's wrong imo to force your beliefs onto others. I think religion should be personal, rather than so communal and forced.

I dated an Orthodox man who told me it was a sin to have a tattoo and listen to rock music. I couldn't deal with that - those extreme beliefs are BS in my eyes.

That man is idiotic. Plenty of Orthodox Christians have tattoos and even play rock music. Has nothing to do with religion. Must be his uptight cuntservative culture.

To say that one must get married is heresy. In fact, the opposite is true: it is better -not- to get married in Catholicism, as St Paul said in his First Epistle to the Corinthians Chapter 7: "Now concerning the thing whereof you wrote to me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman."

At least one of the heresies in the early Church actually was that everyone must get married. Of course, those heretics were censured by the Church, just as this person you speak of should be.

Also, Catholics cannot divorce; that's sacrilege and it automatically excommunicates a person from the Church. There are two options for Catholics: annulments, which are not divorces by any means, and separations, which do not divorce: those who are separated are still married. So, there's a tiny chance that guy is a Catholic. Considerably more likely, he's a sacrilegious heretic.

He's probably had his marriage annulled. OP probably refers to it as 'divorce' because that is the popular term for non-Catholics: we aren't as bothered by the nuances in language.

      • No they told me they got divorced when thier wife decided they didn't love them anymore.

They don't just "hand out" annulments, or, at least, they're not supposed to. It's not an "anyone can get an annulment" sort of thing. In order to get an annulment, one has to prove that one of the two parties' marital vows are illegitimate; that doesn't happen often. If OP wanted to, he could probably ask.

    • So should I tell him he's a heretic and I wish not to fall to temptation of sin? How do I communicate I wish not to be bothered about marriage. Generally in my relationships I'm the provider but I'm not making enough money to provide for two people. So I have to focus on getting a better job.

Just tell him you're not a Catholic at all, and that you don't wish to be Catholic. To make him even less interested in converting you, you can tell him you are already a member of a different Christian sect. Say you are Protestant and you don't wish to be Catholic.

You could call him a heretic non-Catholic if you want to; I don't know if he'd listen to you, though. He seems like a lost cause, honestly, though.

I would stop associating with them. As a former Catholic, I threw out all the legalism to become a born-again Christian. We are all sinners.

    Too much reading.
Slam the door in their face, literally. Invite them in first if you have to.
