How to make kids normal

I worry about social media and technology on the mental health of my kid. I worry that he will spend too much time on the internet and on social media. I also worry he will get addicted to pornography and become socially anxious around people and instead of chasing girls around in his teens he will be playing fortnight and watching porno.

It will be a relief the first time he gets a girlfriend because then I'll be able to relax alittle. I dont want to shelter him from the world at all. Part of me wants to make sure he doesnt get a phone until after hes older but the other part of me doesnt want to shelter him from the "real world." I see it as being a big problem that young people are not getting out enough and its damaging to their social skills and mental health.

Show them how to balance these things. Be a good example as well as understanding when they want to do what all the other kids want to do. But find balance. And find ways to connect with nature. Too many of us have no clue how to deal with the world around us, we need to interact with our world, not just post about it. I love teaching my kids how to garden. Sometimes they just dog holes and make a mess, but I'll take it.

Agreed with howaminotmyself that it's important to teach him balance. You can set a limit on screen time and what sites he can visit, and encourage involvement in hobbies and activities, including ones in which he'll interact with others.

One thing I noticed that was different between myself and a couple of friends who pretty much became addicted to technology and terrified of socialization is that I was always involved in an extracurricular activity. Figure skating, horseback riding, basketball, playing the violin (not all at once, of course, but I was always involved in one or two at a time). I interacted with others, learned to work towards goals, and was active. IMO, it was very rewarding, too.
