Heavily outnumbered by the incomprehensible, irrelevant and plain horrid bits.

Something I notice from this thread (and other places) is that people with a religion almost never look at the books of any other religions. Religion is so divisive!
If people looked beyond their indoctrination into other people's indoctrinations they might all get on a bit better as humans!

Lol that must be it. You're probably the last person who'd become a terrorist though.

I don't have a religion but I do occasionally read people's religious books out of interest. The best so far is the Tao Te Ching (translated to English).. A paperback-sized general guide to not being a dick, with no silly rules based on some egomaniac's foibles a couple of thousand years ago!

I never liked sci-fi or fantasy fiction.

All you need to see god is a stem and some crack. Books are irrelevant at this point

Religion is nothing but a controlling mechanism developed and reinvented over the centuries to keep the masses in order. The common sense elements are just ways of trying to show how "loving" or "caring" the mythical god(s) are in order to justify the more controlling elements. Thankfully the majority of mankind has realised this but there are still a diminishing minority who feel the need to be dictated to and controlled.

Uhm... Have you looked around you lately. The vast majority of people still fall in line. It may not be a religious organization but control is control.

Holy books fucking suck. They are as bad as reading IIN posts and expecting to become a better person. A thousand years ago, people read them because there was nothing better to read. Now there are research articles in scientific journals, literary magazines, and much better shit.

The genealogies are a hoot even if true, used to verify the claim that jesus was descended from David (or was it Abraham?) via Joseph, who wasn't his father anyway if you believe the new testament story that the ghost did it.

What's more, as I recall it, it's all about MALE genealogies, which is ridiculous considering jewishness is traced via the mother and that apparently in those days all that begatting happened with no female involvement.

As for your last statement, I don't have enough years left to waste time & energy on difficult to understand stuff which has no relevance for me anyway.

As a Wiccan I don't have a "Book" to read. I have read the king James bible and a small portions of other holy texts. Theology is a hobby:)

Me neither: my parents were fundamentalist christians who didn't believe in infant baptism and by the time I was old enough to decide for myself I'd firmly decided NO. My daughter and grandkids haven't been baptised either.

I read the Bible Old And New Testament but I don't read it as often as I probably should as a Roman Catholic Christian. The last time I read from it was back in December of last year although Now I'm going to start reading from it again since it's the Season of Lent.
