How do they do polar plunge?

I'm just curious, how the hell do those people around the great lakes manage to do that polar bear plunge and jump in water near freezing when it's 10 or 15 degrees out without ending up with hypothermia or pneumonia? I know that they've probably been drinking, but that still isn't enough to be able to handle that, besides drinking's been proven now not to warm you up.

The big danger about plunging into freezing cold water is heart attack, especially by drunk middle aged men

It's all about alcohol and the rush.

It's the same as bringing home the last girl at the bar.
