How do i stop fixating on all of this?

I’m sorry in advance if this is a long post, because this has been going on for a long time, but I’ll try to summarize it. For the past few years I’ve had issues related to driving. I’m almost 20 years old and have never driven a car before. I was traumatized by some horrific stories I heard. There were points where I was scared to even go outside.

But it goes beyond that. One thing I was told often was that there were a lot of objects that could hurt me, not just cars. I’ve realized that pretty much anything can be used for evil purposes if someone was clever enough. I have to wonder what the people who build these things feel when they hear about injuries and/or deaths caused by what they made. I would really hate to be the person who invented cars, despite whatever positive impact they have had, the fact of the matter is is that they have had negative impacts as well.

I like to think of myself as a creative person, which can clash if you’re as worrisome as me. I want to write books and things, and sometimes I worry that I may somehow have a negative affect on people. For all my talk about disliking cars, I do want to travel more, but unfortunately all means of doing so have potential for killing me! The main thing is: I worry too much about what could happen, and I worry even more if I could cause it. I just want to live a good enough life without it, or anyone else’s, being cut short.

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

It sounds like you have a generalized anxiety disorder, and the amount of worry you are experiencing is not normal & it sounds like it is interfering with your life & hapiness. I'd recommend therapy to deal with it because it's not something that will go away on its own & it doesn't sound like you are happy with the way things are.

As far as your specific fear of driving...oh my god. I have it too. The only thing that i have found that helps is basically exposure therapy. Its where you face your fear (at first in small increments & in a controlled setting, like a driving course where the teacher can stop the car if need be, a defensive driving course, which will tech you how to avoid accidents & what to do if you lose control of a vehicle- this is done in a safe setting, or even starting small & driving in parking lots & backroads with someone you trust). I find that the more i drive, the less horrible anxiety i have about driving. You WILL get more comfortable when you realize that you aren't going to die as soon as you get behind the wheel.

You need to find a good therapist and learn to deal with your fears and anxiety: that's no way to live a life.

Of course, if you're happy as you are just do nothing and find your life increasingly restricted and boring and isolated: up to you

  • Anxiety... Can just pass in time on it own. Yea I suggest you keep forcing yourself out into dangerous (well what you perceive as dangerous) situations. keep going out in real bizzy situations and walking in crowded places. Don't wanna turn Agoraphobic!

It sounds like to suffering from Thanatophobia, the fear of death. Step out and do extreme activities like bungee jumping, mountain climbing, paragliding and skydiving regularly. You may become used to it and the fear may diminish eventually.

I thank you for your input, but here’s an example of this line of thought: say I took your advice and did these things, and something horrible happened to me. Would you be responsible for encouraging me to do the activities?

Not everyone is going to die the same way or not always everyone who does these activities die. It's all about your thoughts. You have to train your brain that nothing bad will happen to you. Maybe psychotherapy can help to train your brain.

Horrific things can happen to you in your home; you could get hit by a meteor, or a foreign government's military's bomb, or you could slip in the shower and crack your skull.

Don't let fear keep you indoors, there is so much more to learn and experience by putting yourself out there both literally and metaphorically.

Did you know that if automoniles weren't invented people in cities likely would have died from all the shit the horses pulling carriages would have left?

Don't be paranoid, go out and take risks, live life. You could possibly die at anytime from dumb things, don't not live because you are in fear of dying.

Are you the same person who asks her brother to drive her places instead of her husband?

I just hope megadriver doesn't see this post because it talks about cars. He will go on this long boring ramble about his stupid cars.
