Yup. Delayed gratification. It makes your situation worse at first but the pay off is fucking amazing.

You will always be miserable until you find a way to live below your means. I live far far below my means. It feels good to make no excuses.

Adjusting your spending to match how much you make

Adjusting your spending to live on 90% of what you make. Millionaires live on 70 - 80% of their income. I live on 50% of my income as a lifestyle experiment in extreme efficiency. My financial efficiency pleases me so much that I laugh about it.

Most the millionaires I personally know live on less than 30% of what they make (and I likely know more than you do). Virtually all of them are totally debt free. I even know one who lives on 10% and donates the rest away (and taxes).

Well, I am a 70 year old millionaire ($1.6M) that is a loner. I only know one other millionaire excluding my oldest son. How many millionaires do you know? Sample size is important.

I have the personal cell phone numbers of at least 5 that I talk to with some regularity.

They are part of a large mentor group and I've met likely about 100 multi-millionaires over the last decade or so. While some of these live large; the fact is that most live on a fraction of their income.

My original mentor from this group was earning over a $Million / month in net profits. He's also the one that made a point that he and his wife lived on only 10% of what he made. Even then, he had a relatively extravagant lifestyle over most people as he had accumulated things over the decades (his properties had been paid off decades ago).

        • Why do millionaires live on 80 to 90%? That's awfully high

More like 70 to 80%. This varies with the millionaire. Some millionaires (like me) find it easy to fly under the radar. Others, like top notch salesmen and business owners depend on contacts to keep business activity moving. Image is ultra important for these people. They need to conform to standard expectations of other rich people.

Most millionaires are low key and don't live flashy lifestyles (this has been studied). I suggest that you read the book "The Millionaire Next Door" and its more modern follow-ups.

The vast majority of flashy millionaires are "paper millionaires" and would be broke quickly if they lost their current job.

Most millionaires are conservative with their money; and will stay millionaires if they loose their job or company.

Edited to add: My goal and plan is to become a millionaire+ as a side effect of assisting other people or companies (that's what success companies do - they assist their clients well enough to earn lots of $ over time).

I study millionaires and try to learn from them.

I'm going to suggest that you need to identify your key dream in life... and go for it. Then you will have energy to do things that need to be done to achieve it.

I advise you that you will be better off if you find a way to expand your income to live your dreams; than reduce your lifestyle to below your income.

Many people have done that... and achieved total financial independence... and do in fact live the life of their dreams. But, first they had to identify how they wanted to live their life; and made a decision to go for it - and not let anything stand in the way.

You will almost certainly change jobs and perhaps even start business (or several businesses) in the process.

I wish you well with this...
