Eating healthy food makes me more depressed

Hello,
I am someone who has zero friends. I've actually never had a friend, and I'm usually okay with it. Sometimes it can be depressing though, and I found that the one thing that comforts me is food. (Pizza, Hamburgers, and cookies mainly) I'm not super overweight, but I'm not in shape. The few times that I have tried to eat healthy, I start getting depressed. I guess it's because I don't have the comfort from the food I love eating. I was just wondering if it's normal that eating healthy makes me sad lol

I dunno, but I know I have a real sweet tooth myself. Yesterday though I ate so much bacon! I also want to go buy me some more of that grade B maple syrup!

If you can find grade B, please tell us where to get it. Trader Joe's used to have it, but kept getting sold out.

Maybe you're just not eating the right stuff. We have this view of healthy eating that it's not something that's done for pleasure. However, take it from those stick-thin Europeans I'm currently living among - it CAN be incredibly pleasurable. You just need to find food you like.

    How about...
Porridge with semi skimmed milk and cacao powder (not cocoa, cacao- this stuff gives you a bigger endorphin hit) with cinnamon and honey? It's filling, chocolatey, sweet and doesn't feel as healthy as it is...

    OR
Cream of tomato soup. Especially Heinz. Or Campbells. Any tomato soup that isn't watery. Classic comfort food.

    OR
Black tea with a dash of milk. The caffeine from the tea gives you a gentle energy boost and the milk is calming. A cup of tea is like a hug in a mug.

Oranges make me feel happy but only when they're sweet and super juicy. I LOVE blood oranges. The only hassle with them is that they're a bit hard to peel and that is a pleasure killer.

Bananas have always made me feel happy.

Slippery, red cooked beetroot (the stuff that comes in vacuum packs) is satisfyingly squidgy to eat.

Pickles!! So much fun fishing them out of the jar then crunching into them and getting that sharp, vinegary explosion of taste (or dill herb taste, or chilli taste... depending on what they've been pickled in).

Avocado. The texture of avocados is just luxurious. Half an avocado per day is supposed to be the healthy limit because they're quite fatty - but it's a GOOD kind of fat that lowers your cholesterol and WAY better than any burger, pizza or fries you could eat. Just slice the avocado in half and eat it as it is, enjoying the curiously creamy feel of it and the delicate flavour, or... mash half an avocado into a kind of paste and put it on a toasted muffin with lemon dressing (google how to make this), fine chopped red onions and tomatoes, a few salad leaves and a twist of pepper. Who'd have thought a fruit could be creamy? Only cut into an avocado if gives when you press it. The more give, the riper (and IMO the more delicious) it is.

ALSO I LOVE Soreen banana loaf. Banana bread is just delicious, soft, sweet and moreish.

Hard boiled eggs are little elliptoids of happiness. I love that you can take them with you and eat them anywhere! If you boil the water BEFORE adding the eggs, then cool the eggs rapidly under cold water immediately after they're done, the shell comes off more easily. De-shelling hard boiled eggs is a gamble of pleasure or pain - extremely satisfying when the shell comes off easily; extremely annoying when it doesn't. And when it's off... eating hard boiled eggs is all about texture. I don't even like the taste that much. I love the feel of the smooth, hard shell then the delicate, squidgy white in my hands, then the chalky yolk after biting into it...
They also give you energy and make you feel fuller than fries do - probably because they're packed with protein. You can healthily eat 2 eggs per day because the yolks do contain cholesterol, but again like with avocados and fat, it's a different kind of cholesterol than what you find in fast food and in smallish amounts, this kind is very good for you.

Pineapple makes me happy. There never seems to be enough of it.

Passion fruit. Physalis. Strawberries. Any red berry. Pomegranate - those hundreds of tiny red gems waiting to be discovered!! Expensive, but an absolute treat. And who doesn't love the challenge of trying to break into a coconut?

ALSO my FAVOURITE substitute for icecream is frozen red berries. You can find bags of frozen fruit in the freezer section of the supermarket. You can sprinkle on a tiny bit of icing sugar and pour some single cream on top and it freezes with the berries!!

    Also...
Warm semi skimmed milk with a tablespoon of honey. It's very comforting to drink this when you are feeling lonely and sad.

    Also...
Hot water with a splash of pure lemon juice and a tablespoon of honey. Great for colds - also just great for an energy kick and to feel better if you're feeling blue.

Try some of these and tell me again that healthy food makes you feel depressed.

I wouldn't necessarily go for a lot of these specifc suggestions, but I 100% agree with your sentiment. People think healthy eating needs to be horrible rabbit food that they force down. It's not that hard to make tasty healthy food, you just have to buy good quality ingredients and take some time to find the stuff that you like.

Eating the HEALTHIEST diet is gonna suck, but yeah, for most people that is unnecessary. People get scared that they have to eat like bodybuilders just to be a healthy weight, when it is totally overboard. But eating to look as best as possible naked? Yep, that sucks...

It's because alot of those unhealthy foods like pizza, Chinese, burgers, deep fried foods, ice cream, cake, pie, candy, etc. really are comfort foods that your mind has gotton used to being soothed by. Then once you stop eating them, you'll feel empty for a while. The best thing to do is to not stop eating them entirely, but to make those foods between 10% to 20% of your diet, and then eat fruit, veg, whole grains, and lean meats the other 80% to 90%. You didn't specify, but it sounded like you gave up the unhealthy comfort foods 100%, and if you do that when you're not used to it, you will feel empty. It takes time to adjust, so it's best to start with keeping about 20% of your comfort foods in your diet. But don't go any more because you need to eat the healthy foods and be healthy.

Oh, and raise your self esteem. It shouldn't matter what anyone else thinks of you as long as you like yourself. And, you should always do what makes you most happy, not what others tell you you should do, as long as you're not breaking the law, of course.

Oh, I didn't mean to sound like I was contradicting myself when saying that you should do what makes you happy, not what others tell you what to do, after me giving you a whole paragraph about how you should eat healthy, 80% healthy, 20% comfort foods, and all that. That was just my advice. My whole comment here is just my general advice

  • Exercise everyday, I mean real long jogs or something that gets the old ticker pumping and makes you sweat. Make it only once a week you eat junk food like pizza or burger, something to look forward to. I make a lot off asian/thai food, it is very yummy but not as fattening an unhealthy like western takeaway

You have a poor relationship with food to the point that eating calorically dense foods, the kind that usually tastes better, is a stress reliver for you. I would definitly be aware of this and try to limit your consumption, because it is people like you who can get very overweight very fast. Also seek personal training or a nutrition coach online ir at your local gym. I would coach you if that were somehow possible. I am working on my degree in exercise science right now and am interning as a PT at a local gym.

Not normal, but I could see why if its taking away one of the few (if not only) things you enjoy in life. Maybe you should try looking for recipes and find something that both tastes good and is healthy.
