Does the music you like have vocals?

Almost all of the music I listen to doesn't have any lyrics. Oftentimes my friends tease me a bit about it, and it seems a lot of the people around me listen to "real bands." Is this really all that unusual?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • Most of my music has lyrics; though in several different languages and some that don't even exist. Listening to instrumental music is totally normal. I listen to gobs of orchestral, cinematic, classical, and otherwise lyricless music. You're fine.

  • The genres I listen to usually have lyrics, except for the occasional rock "instrumental", like for example,"Frankenstein", from the Edgar Winter Group, "YYZ" by Rush, or any of the music of Joe Satriani. satch's work is all without lyrics, and he plays an epic guitar!

Listen to "summer song" from Joe Satriani, and you see what I mean. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NJ_nzOckOQ

  • The fuck is a "real band"? If it sounds good, listen to it. I listen to a lot of genres that are lyric-based but I also listen to a lot of electronic sub-genres and from time-to-time some classical. You don't need words to make the listener feel emotion.

  • Oftentimes is a strange word to see written. Has it made it into written Americanese these days?

    • Oftentimes I'll use often but other times I'll use oftentimes, sometimes.

  • Most of the stuff I listen to has lyrics. It feels kind of weird without them. Theres nothing wrong with listening to music without them though, OP. We all have different tastes.
