Do you think trophy or non-survival hunting is acceptable?

I think hunting, as a "sport" is disgusting. By sport, I mean killing animals, just to kill them, or have them stuffed, so you can brag to your mindless buddies.
Killing animals, for meat, bone, & hide, is millenia old, and was necessary, before there were "grocery stores".
Using poison, or spring traps, or chasing them down with dogs, horses, snowmobiles, ATV's, helicopters, etc., is about as in-humane, as I can think of, for obvious, suffering, reasons.

Also, this "catch & release" bullshit anglers use, is CRAP. You "catch" a fish, rip the hook out of it's face or guts, and "release" it, bloody, back into the water . . . . where it will suffer, and later bleed to death. SERIOUSLY ?!

I live in Wisconsin, where sturgeon (fish), ducks, wild turkey, pheasant, quail, bear, deer, and other animals have hunting seasons, where a license is required. I DO NOT HUNT, FISH, OR SHOOT anything, but that's my personal choice. Our deer have "chronic wasting disease" - a brain virus, and many of our fish STILL have mercury poisoning and other toxins, and water-fowl, which migrate all over North America - Canada to Mexico/S.America, are susceptible to a whole host of aviary bacteria.
Even our domesticated animals, such as dairy cows, have "mad cow" disease....
While I don't have an issue with my friends, who DO hunt, fish, shoot - legally, I don't tolerate friends who "sport kill" wild animals, just to kill "something", or those who poach (hunt out-of-season) without a license. These are the same people, who typically abuse pets, and/or have an aggressive mindset, towards their relationships, other humans, and law enforcement.
Also NOT my kind of people, are those who hunt deer, for the antlers, or bear, for the fur or claws, or even fish, to have mounted - Trophy hunters. Trophy killing is sick, because a beautiful animal is taken out of the natural balance of the eco-system, so some moron, can show-off to others, that they killed an animal, who doesn't have a chance.

Look what we did, to the Amercian Bison (buffalo), in the 1800's, when the locomotives reached accross the West.... we shot them by the millions, out the train windows.... we didn't even eat them, or use their fur.... like native Americans did. We killed them, for "sport" almost to extinction. In the 1700's, we almost extincted the beaver, and American River Otter, for pelts, but at least we used them, for necessary "clothing".
We recently re-introduced the North American Grey Wolf, which were practically extincted by cattle ranchers, in the midwest.
In the early 1900's, ostrich & egret feather hats, were "fashionable" for well-to-do women. For almost 1,000 years, we hunted whales, for their meat, and blubber, which we turned into "whale oil" for indoor lighting, and almost extincted several species, including the sperm whale, of Moby Dick fame.
Today, there are assholes, who kill tigers, lions, rhinceros, elephants, and many other endangered animals, for TROPHY.

Years ago, when I worked for the U.S.D.A.while attending college, we had an "11th Commandment" . . . .

"We are stewards of the Earth, and must protect the flora and fauna, that they may exist, in harmony, with us"

Hunting for "sport" is a bad aspect of human nature 8
It's historical, but un-necessary 0
It's in our blood, as humans 0
Go to the grocery store 0
Hunting is fine, as long as the animal is used for survival: meat, skin, fur, etc. 2
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

    Tl;dr
I'm an avid hunter and fisherman who would never hunt for sport.

In case you are curious, my reasons for hunting are simple: I want to know that in the event of an economic collapse or some type of disaster that I'll be able to feed myself and family until things get better. During the great depression my relatives may have starved to death had it not been for my great grandfathers ability to put meat on the table through hunting.

As far as hunting for trophy or catch and release, I'm with you. These guys are just showing off that they can hunt or fish and dont care about the animals suffering.

I read your whole post & I very much agree. I'm not against hunting, even though I don't think I could kill an animal myself- that would just break my heart (i don't have any particularly extreme views, but I just couldn't do it)...But if you are eating the animal & using all the parts, it's actually way, way more humane than buying meat at the store- those animals were probably factory farmed in horrific conditions that are extremely bad for the environment. At least the animals that you hunt in the woods had good, healthy, free lives. Getting meat this way is much less cruel towards the animals & much better for the environment, especially if you are talking about culling animals that would otherwise starve/dehydrate from overpopulation- like deer & kangaroos. Killing them is ethical & more humane than eating animals that were raised to be killed in poor conditions. Sometimes killing certain animals is the most humane thing to do.

Sport hunting, hunting just to kill, hunting animals just because they are exotic...that is shameful & disgusting & involves killing for no reason. It's so sad.

I totally agree with you & it's awesome to hear from someone in Wisconsin who thinks that way, coz it's a big hunting state!

Trophy hunting is a gruesome practice. This topic reminds me of that dentist who went to Africa, and shot that lion. He lost a lot of patients because of his actions, and I certainly would have left him as well. I think it's important to not give people, or businesses with whom I have moral disagreements my business.

It is a senseless, violent, and moral "crime" against Mother Nature, and serves NO purpose, other that to make the killer "feel superior" ...... ( to who? )

I see no difference in mentality, between those people, and the shooters in El Paso, and Dayton, this weekend.....

      Indiscriminate killing.

Cecil the lion. The story is so bad...Cecil was elderly, non aggressive & didn't even have teeth & that dude lured him off a wildlife preserve with meat & then shot him.

His house was actually near my mom's vacation home in Marco Island, Florida & it still gets vandalized bahahaha

        Poor Cecil! 😭

What kind of piece of shit, coward shoots a beloved, toothless, non-aggressive lion? I'm asking that rhetorically of course. 🤓

I'm glad to hear that guy's house still gets vandalized. 😎👍🏻

I do recall hearing somewhere that the dentist guy was supposedly unaware of how beloved the lion was, and the fact that Cecil was a park favorite. Regardless, I don't care about that man, or his life, or feelings! I think trophy hunting is just such an ugly practice.

You know if I ever had the kind of money necessary to own a big cat I would probably have it's body body cremated, or actually buried in a pet cemetery, because that's what you do when someone you love dies. 🕊

Hahaha...I don't think anyone is going to put a hamburger in his yard, wait till he comes outside & then shoot him with an arrow.

        • Oh, the shit-eating grin on his face as he's crouched down beside the dead lion. What an A-class dickhead.

Ugh, I just looked up the picture of that guy on Google. What a piece of shit! If I had the kind of money that guy spends on that bullshit I would be able to do a lot of good things!

Catch and release fish don't die. Anyone who wants to chase a trophy deer or fish just to get a trophy, I don't have a problem with. Now I would say its morally wrong to hunt or fish just to kill things, but there is no way to police that.

    Doesnormalmatter,

"Catch and release fish don't die". How do you know? Do you swim after them, to make sure?
    What an imbecile.
