Do you think there should be a separate is it normal site for younger people?

It's no secret that there are plenty of underage users on IIN. And I think most of us agree that this isn't a good place for fourteen-year-olds to be hanging around. But if you think about it, the teenage years are often the time people have the most questions. To keep them off is it normal and to satisfy the younger people's needs, do you think that is it normal should make a separate site for teenagers?

I don't really care. 24
Yes, this would be a good idea. 43

I don't think this is a good idea. 28
I don't think there are enough underage users for it to matter. 9
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

      This.

      It's a grey area, I admit.

However, I know some very good users who have been or even still are underage, yet are major (and very good) contributors to the site.

While I don't feel comfortable with some younger teens being on here, considering the content and what have you, I don't think seperating or banning (unless their behaviour is inappropriate - though I think that should be for any member, regardless of age) is the answer.

Yeah. Either way, though, there's no way of restricting it. Or at least I can't think of one. I mean, you don't have to be a member to read the site. Anyone can do that. And even when signing up, you can obviously lie about your age. I know I'm 18 now, so I'm actually allowed to use the site now, but I obviously have been underage for a lot of my time here. I would like to hope that I haven't been one of the negative users, and I know that there are great users who are underage.

Like I said, I think a site for younger users is pointless. I do think children shouldn't be able to access things which they seriously shouldn't see, but that's a different matter entirely, really. And I don't see that as being the responsibility of the site's owners, but rather parents and all that sort of thing.:P Either way, I can't see it working well, and my brains too flajeebed and flaggered to work right now. Ahh, greyness. Yes, it's grey indeed! Probably. I can't remember where I was going with this:P.

You're definitely one of the better users of any age :)

Exactly. Parents need to be responsible for the way their children use the internet.

Flajeebed. I love that word. I'm stealing it ;)

I don't generally mind the younger users. Some are rather insightful. Physical age doesn't mean maturity. There are plenty of users who are plenty old enough to be here but lack the maturity of the average teenager. They annoy me more. How would one accommodate that?

    Not a good idea.

The solution to the 'underage' problem is to remove the age restriction so there is no underage (it's not like the age restriction works anyway). Have a 'warning: mature content which may not be suitable for children' notification instead. There's already a safe mode in place for those more sensitive individuals.

I'm not sure. Maybe. The only way I could see it is if it had professionals monitoring it. Or would it be lets see college freshman who are mentally sound and well meaning, how do you process that?

    WHO would process that?

Could be an opportunity for new jobs.

    Thanks for making this post.

I wonder what kind of world it will be, when role models are replaced with computer models. Where sacred sites are replaced with websites. Where a person comes into adulthood through an online forum.

This is precisely why we need to change our mind-sets, from one based on attaining a particular age to receive rights to do something, to one where rights are earned through responsible behaviour, in an integrated educational program.

For the time being, I have no problem with young people being on this, or other so-called age restricted websites. But, the young people should recognize that this website is an adult forum, and their behaviour should be at least equivalent to that of an average eighteen year old.
In other words, act responsibly, not immaturely.

In the future then, according to plan, young people would need to earn the rights to do a particular activity, through a comprehensive testing procedure, whereby they will need to prove a maturity level in order to gain access to something.
This will, in turn, help to guide them in areas where they might be deficient.
A foolproof system will need to be developed on the Internet, in order to achieve this. This could be part of the test.
    A learning process.

my problem isnt the ae of the users. its the maturity, or lack there of, of them. age only has loose relavence on the precieved maturity of the users.

side note, can we fucking stop with the fucking BS naruto/DBZ/etc polls and post, for fuck sake, this isnt the site and it isnt 2004. no one gives a flying fuck. it tards like that, that give everyone who enjoy anime or animation in genreal a bad rap. i wish you people just got outside and go larping or something, but that be an insult to larpers

I think there should be a limit to what underage users can read (Not post, though) and a simple marker to identify who is underage.
I don't know know about you, but I feel real creepy when I figure out I just gave advice to a 16 year old about anal sex, for example.

I feel like it's good for them when they have serious questions because they have a whole community of older more experienced people to help them out. Sure sometimes they can be annoying but if only other 14 year olds were answering their questions they wouldn't really be getting many helpful answers.

No, I don't believe there should be a website created for the sole purpose of teenagers to congregrate, it would be a paedo's heaven. If people can't handle the content of the internet or a particular web page they shouldn't be on the fucking thing.

Yeah, like they would stay off IIN in favor of a site full of stupid ass teenagers. Hell, no guarantee that they would stay off, period. I know I sound like an asshole but think about it, most of them would probably stay here regardless.

I'd rather they stay here where they can possibly get good adult answers from experienced adults.

Please do not use the Archaic term pertaining to a nether world.
Please try to find a new and inoffensive interjection or exclamation, if desired.

This is how the younger generations learn and perpetuate these archaic terms.

Why are you introducing Archaic religious terminology, where it does not belong.

It won't work. Believe me, IIN did try a similar experiment but it didn't work.

The best thing we can do is to just utilise the tools we have on hand ie. the thumbs up/down system and also the approval story button in the unmoderated section. Posting stories like this will entice trolls to post such material you wish to stop. You're giving them a reaction with this post and that the very thing that trolls thrive on.

Yes we had a separate forum.

Due to all the crap on it, and a couple of us spending half of our time on it deleting crap off it, I asked Udi to close it off late last year. Don't get me wrong, the experiment went great with our regulars but the trolls took advantage of the forum.

I voted other because it doesn't really matter, teens will come on here anyway. But you know what? I change my mind. It would be a bad idea to make a separate site from teens only because teens can be more judgemental, and teenagers who will become adults sometimes need that adult advice and guidance they cannot always get at home. I was 17 when I joined and even though that's not much younger, here I could ask an adult audience about things concerning sex and get good answers from people more experienced than teenagers. Imagine being a 17, almost 18 year-old girl, asking something serious about sex and getting a bunch of 13 year-old boys replying. Yeah, real helpful.

This is a great idea but it will not work for the following reasons.

*teenagers can not solve their own issues since they are too young and only have parents or other idiot teens to listen to. Most teens are unbelievably stupid and adults will often push their own ideals without explaining things the child MUST KNOW.

*The reason we have IIN an only 18 year old site is the child policy protection law. So they would need parents to sign off if we made a child site. Which I doubt parents are going to approve of such things.

*We would most likely still get kids coming since they do not want to admit this personal stuff to parents. Which the parents will want to know.

*We would also need people scouting to find the minors running around this website. To get them kicked off the website.

Granted this is a really great idea. However I am not sure how it would really work. I do agree with it though.
